I had a palm IIIxe and a sony clie t-615. I outgrew the palm really fast and my wallet couldn't keep up with sony releasing a new pda every month. I made the switch to ppc and I prefer it to palm.

I owned 3 Palm Vx's before converting to "The Dark Side".

I still like the simplicity of PalmOS and the ways you patch into the system with "hacks"...but I won't consider buy Palm again until they raise their functionality level to that of PPC.

I still need to keep one of my Vx running as I have a CDPD wireless contract until November, and I have an engine management program for my car that's not available in PPC.

Long time Palm boy

I had the PalmPilot5000 when it first came out. I upgraded it to the PalmPilot Pro. Replaced that with a WorkPad (Palm III) equivalent and lived with that for years. When the time came to upgrade again, I was looking at the Tungsten (didn't look long), the Sony Clie (very nice unit) and the IPAQ. When the Axim came out, it was the perfect balance of price to features, so I took the plunge and made the OS jump.

I REALLY like the extra flexibility of PocketPC that you just couldn't do in PALM OS, but there is simply no comparison when it comes to speed. I have now gotten used to starting the app I want five seconds before I need it (hoping that Mobile Windows 2003 will help address this new habit). I also prefer using Graffiti for input, but find that PocketPC apps tend to put a bunch of tappable hotspots adjacent to the grafitti area so if you are sloppy, the screen changes on you. With my Palm, I could look somewhere else and grafitti away at full speed. On my Ax, I have to look at what I am writing to ensure my screen hasn't changed due to my stylus wandering out of the grafitti area. The PALM OS development community also was much more into freeware. I only ever purchased one or two apps for Palm, but have already spent over $200.00 on PocketPC apps.

Those minor gripes aside, I'm a HUGE Axim fan and I love my Ax.

I started out with a Visor Deluxe, then to a Prism, then i went to an EM-500, then to a Treo, then to a Clie 760C.

I like the palm platform, but i decided that the flexibility of PocketPC should be better for me, so i ordered my Ax on 6/23.

I use to play with my brother's Clié. But when I went shopping for my wife's PDA I ended up getting a Compaq iPaq 3765, my first PDA. :)

My first foray was the palm M125 and I thought I had died and gone to heaven. After about 6 months I inherited a Sony SJ-30 and was blown away. I always wanted the PPC, but the cost was too prohibitive. I took advantage of a Compgeeks deal about 3 months ago and will never turn back. A buddy has one of the really really high end sony's that had me tempted for a while, but after seeing how easily I connected to my wireless network, and seeing how much trouble he has had with his sony, I will NEVER go back

Just so you don't feel alone DWMartin - I miss my palm as well. I find the PPC to be cluttered for my taste. I also find myself doing many soft resets and occassional hard resets - something I never did on my palm. I mainly used my palm for contact management and appointments. Mainly because thats all it could do well. I started off using my ppc for the same reasons, but have slowly grown to using it's other features. It takes the sting out of missing the palms simplicity a bit. Listening to music and storing pictures on it are all great features I couldn't get out of my grayscale palm.

I miss the fast search features as well as the fast response from the hundreds of contacts I got out of my palm. Something the PPC doesn't do well, but overall it was a good switch. I'm happy about it - hope you are as well.

Palm m105, blech. Now I don't have to squint!

I've been contemplating giving the m105 to somebody in my family but think it might actually make them want a PDA less. Guess I'll keep thinking about it.

The September issue of Pocket PC Mag had a bunch of calculator suggestions, let me see if I can find them.

They suggest:

CoolCalc from www.applian.com

RapidCalc www.developerone.com

Abacus XT www.ksesoftware.com

MxCalculator www.trancreative.com

and for business

Pocket MBA Calc www.odysseyinc.com

I hope one of those helps you out.

I see this argument put out moreso than anything... and if given the choice between multitasking, or doing a 10-second reset process 2 to 3 times a week (of heavy use), that is not EVEN a contest to me, go for the multitasking (and nicer apps IMHO). Especially if PIM is irrelevant.
