New PPC that's coming out...
Well, I now have a second thought on my plan with Axim.
After using Axim 300 for two weeks, 4 days ago I called Dell to arrange return of 300 (purchased for $180) and ordered a 400 (PPC2003, $258 after coupon). The new 400 probably will take at least a few more days to be shipped.
But now I realize that there will soon be many new PPCs coming out. Now from Toshiba, HP/Compaq, Gateway, etc. and later this year by Dell. I'm having a second thought... maybe I should stick with 300 (not returned yet) and save the price difference of $80 for the next generation of PPCs.
A friend told me that soon there will be PPC with VGA (640x480?) screen. And I do hope the Axim to be lighter and slimmer. If Wi-Fi is built-in, the CF slot is not needed and the PPC can certainly be slim. An ideal PPC for me is to keep everything they do now but to be implemented in a form factor of Palm Vx.
Any info (on what to expect on future PPC) and thoughts?
Cheers.

I too had the same dilemna when trying to decide if I needed the advanced over the basic. For me it was 180 for the basic vs 293 for the advanced. I decided that the extra 100 mhz of processing and 32 ram wasn't worth the extra $100+ dollars. I bought a 256 SD card from sandisk to make up for the lack of memory. I was thinking also that I would probably only use this unit for a couple of years and probably get a better one with integrated bluetooth and wi-fi, hopefully a thinner model too. If you don't use your ppc for games or watching videos, you shoulda stuck with the basic system as it is very sufficient for most things.

You never know about the future, but the PPC with VGA screen sounds bogus to me. So far as I know, the OS doesn't even support it. And, it sure wouldn't fit in the form factor.

Similar situation here. My Axim is not even used for PDA functions. For these I'm still using Palm Vx due to sufficient (some still better) PDA functions and simller size and weight.
I expect my Axim to be continously used at home as a toy and a wireless Internet browing/searching tool. I do have some video playback issues (not always smooth) but not sure if it's CPU or memory related. Maybe the new PPC2003 will work better, if I can get free upgrade for my two-week-old Basic?

Really! Are you sure that PPC 2003 can't support VGA?

Re: New PPC that's coming out...
The CF Card function is a valuable function! For one, it's a fairly common memroy format and one of the reasons I picked the Axim over other brands. In addition, useful hardware addons (like WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.) need a CF slot to run at proper speeds and levels of functionality.

I understand your problem Ehien, but you can't hold back from buying something now just because something better is coming out. If you did that for every type of electronic or computer product you would never buy anything. There is alwasy something bigger and better coming out in a couple of months. The question is are you going to enjoy yourself now with what you have or continue to wait for the better stuff to come out. My advice is buy what you like now and then if the stuff that comes out later is that much better save your money pawn the old and get the new.
Ben.

I agree with Benjamin. There is always going to be something better coming out. If you wait for the next best thing, you will never get anything.

Yeah I totally agree too. This is always the case for high tech stuffs.
My dilemma is not exactly that though. It's more 300 vs 400 and then what to expect 6 or 12 mo. down the road. 300 is likely good enough for me, especially if it can be updated with the more efficient PPC 2003. I'm just trying NOT to get too carried away with a cool toy. That's all.
So, is VGA PPC possible in a year or so? ;)
Hey, if I keep 300/Basic, am I going to be look down upon or rejected by this community? ;) ;)

Half joking... but I do see most of members here own Advanced instead of Basic. And whenver qustions regarding choices between these two came up, Advanced was (almost) always favored. Just thought Basic might be "good enough" for certain situations...:rolling:

You don't have to admit you only have a 300 - how would we really know? :)
Everybody has always been welcome here, so far as I can see. Even those who like the 2215.

LOL
no the basic is good enough, the mean reason we always say the advance is better is because of the memory it has (the ram and the rom) we weren't sure if the basic was able to upgrade to mobile 2003 because of its limited rom size, But now we know its possible I can tell you the basic is a real good machine!
There isn't a big diff between the two models in preformance and it really depens on what you re planning to do with it. I always say to go for the advance because of the slightly better preformance when playing movies, the extra storage space and ofcourse the cradle.
I would like to say it again: WELCOME TO AXIMSITE, Dear Basic user:D

So, is VGA PPC possible in a year or so?
|
It's possible now, but the boys in Redmond don't want that for some reason... they restrict OEMs to QVGA even though the sharp Zaurus uses 640x480 fine, with current day technology. In fact, hte digitizers I believe are already VGA, just the displays are QGA and it rounds, unless it needs extra resolution for handwriting recognitiion or something like that. That couldbe made 1:1 instead of 4:1, and the tihng owuld look a lot sharper, be able to view WAY more text, and numerous other benefits... it's a shame they don't simply put in the stupid screen, and set OS resolution to 480x640 with pixel doubling for fixed apps, and an API to take advantage of the extra space.
