2007 X5 purchaser

Just purchased my first Pocket PC and I have no idea what to do. They person who sold it to me included a copy of Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC 2003 and and a CD with games but I have know idea how to use anything. I have looked around this site but I haven't had a lot of look figuring anything out. I really don't know where to start so could someone give me any advise.

First things first. I am having trouble charging my X5 with the cradle. I don't have the AC power cord that connects to the cradle just the usb cable which can't be disconnected anyway. I thought that I could just plug in the usb and get power like I do with my IPOD. Do I have to have the power cord?

I'm not certain about the X5.
But the general rule is that USB power is not stronge enough to charge with the Ax turned on.
Also if the battery is very low it won't charge.
An adapter is your best option.

I don't think she charges with just the usb connection?

I'd purchase a cheapo charger that connects to the cradle.

Think huge SD cards (Can watch movies and listen to music on it at least.)

Purchase Pocket chess from chessbase and play chess.:approve:

The X5 cradle will not charge the device via the USB. All the Axim chargers have identical specs so you can use one regardless of which device it was sold with and you can also use iPaq and PSP chargers (which are more easily found in retail stores).

my 1 gig SD card was $20 on sale at circut city but you can find them almost everywhere - even drug stores carry them (many digital camera use them). the X5 only supports 1 gig or less SD cards so dont get anything bigger. CF cards can be any size but you should save the CF slot for other things. install your programs to the SD card instead of Main Memory (during the install it will ask you if you want to install to the Default location, tell it No and then select SD card).

grab TCPMP for your video player (free) and if you like chess head to www.valil.com/chess for a very good free chess game.

I play movies, mp3s, read ebooks and play chess on mine, as well as keep contacts and notes. I also keep copies of some of my Word docs and Exel spreadsheets on mine but dont usually create them on the X5, just refer to them when Im out.

one thing you should do is get into the habit of making Full and PIM Backups, its simple, built in and fast. save them to your desktop box and/or SD card.

My X5 is my life. I am constantly looking for WIFI spots to check email and monitor whata on AXIMSITE. I use it for scheduleing, tasks, my contacts. I have download many ebooks, manuals, and 1 SD card filled with books on tape, and several filled with Movies. I can use the existing Word and Excel to complete work at home, and then sync them when I get back to the office. I have created many databases I use throughout the day. The question should be "What can't you do with an X5??"

I have a spare, that I would never get rid off. If anything happened to my main one, all I would have to do is sync and move the SD and CF card, and I would be ready to go.

When I bought my x5 from a friend he told me that if you connect the
usb to a powered hub then it will recharge with just the USB attached to the cradle

a flat axim battery takes over 2amperes of current to charge if your powered hub can supply that it will work but the usb circuitry in the axim probably will shut down from overcurrent
