StrataFlash Memory question

Does anyone use their StrataFlash memory for storage or for programs?

Someone on this board wrote that it only had a read/write life of 1,000 or 10,000 times, so you shouldn't use it. To be safe, I didn't use it. However, according to the Intel web site, the life is 100,000 cycles (if I'm reading it correctly). At 100k, even accessing it 25 times aday gives a life of 10 years, longer than the life of my Axim.

Anyone know for sure about this memory?

I have a gut feeling that after the PPC 2003 upgrade there will be very little freespace left in the 32Mb Axim units.

flash memory has a LOT of available read/write cycles.

i've read that SD cards can be entirely rewritten 3 times a day and still last ten years. the Axim ROM shouldn't be any different.

i really wouldn't pay any attention to concerns about writing to the rom, it's a waste of money if you don't use the space.

Well ... that might be true ... but the Flash ROM is the only space you can put the OS (and any expansion future upgrades might require). Here's another point that came out in earlier threads. Sometimes writing to flash doesn't work. When this happens, memory is lost. If you were writing to a memory card, you can just reformat it. But you can't reformat the ROM.

Personally, I decided to put some large but stable aps in my ROM -- Lectionary, French-English translator - Acrobat Reader. When I loaded them, I made sure that everything was plugged into AC power, no alarms were coming due, no aps were running in the background (soft reset), and no other aps were running on my PC. Paranoid? Maybe.

@Alphawolf

Don't worry. You're correct. Flash-memory has about 1K write-life cycle. The stratflash however is around 100k. So don't worry!

Regards,
Peter
