Dell 300 or 400?
Hi-
I am looking into buying a Dell Axim and was just wondering if anyone has
any opinions on whether I should get the 300 or 400 one. I can always buy
the cradle separetely - the speed is what I am questioning. Does an extra
100 really make any difference? Thanks!

I was faced with the same predicament when I bought mine. I opted for the 400 merely for the fact that I didn't want to wonder how it would be to have the faster version. In retrospect, I'm glad I did. I've been pleasantly surprised on the amount of stuff my axim will do, and as creep toward the Ax's full potential, I can't believe I even thought about going with the slower model.
On the other hand, if you're not planning on using too many of its applications, I'd definitely save the money and buy the 300

I don't think you'll notice the difference in speed. But the extra ROM is nice. And there is not substitute for RAM. Everything has to go into RAM before it runs -- whether you have a memory card or not. So if the $$$ isn't that important to you, definately go for the 400.

If money is an object then buy the 300. (Realize that you will want to buy a case, screen protectors, maybe a wifi card, memory cards, software, ..... )
If it will always nag you as to whether you should have bought the better one, then buy the 400.
I have yet to see any evidence on this site that there are apps that have problems running on the 300, except possibly video playback. I am happy with my 300.

It depends what you want to do with you Axim.
I went for the 400 because of the extra RAM, and not so much for the speed. If you will mainly use the Axim as a PIM I think you might be happy with the 300, but if you want to run a few applications and use the Axim for more than a Palm substitute I suppose you should go for the 400.

If you have the money for it go ahead and get the 400. I enjoy the 300 but I wouldn't mind having the 400 for the extra RAM, processor isn't that important especially with the new OS coming.

I've had at least 10 average apps loaded and running at the same time on my 300 and it didn't seem to care. I guess if you want more than that then you would need the 400. I don't think the RAM is an issue unless you refuse to buy a memory card to supplement it.
I have heard the suggestion that mapping/GPS can benefit from more memory but I don't have any direct experience.

i'm actually considering downgrading to a 300 w/pxa255 from my 400 w/pxa250. the thing with the ram is that my programs barely seem to use more than 12 or 15 MB of it, and i barely use any of the RAM set aside for storage (use two 256 MB SDs instead). I do use the BIS to store all my programs though. after removing my ebooks from the BIS, it looks like i'm only using 8 or 9 MB for actual programs. but i guess the basic would only have like 4 MB left over after you account for WM2003.
decisions decisions.....

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: It's not the speed that is the biggest difference, it's the storage. The additional RAM/ROM is worth the extra $75 or whatever it is now.
