Worried file manager

I am quite new to pocket pc environment. I do not have any expansion cards, so I am using whatever my axim advanced has on it.

My first question is how much ram and rom, does axim advanced has? What is Ram and what is Rom ? Which one is the Build In Storage ? When I save something, am I saving it to Ram or Rom ?
And finally, how can I see how much Ram and Rom left on my axim ? Do I need a special file manager for that or file explorer will it and how?

Any answer would be appreciated. Thanks.

The machine has ROM which is "Read Only Memory". Basically this memory is permanent and cannot be erased easily. The operating system and built-in programs are stored in this memory. A part of this ROM is unused and can be used by the user for storage. It is called builtin storage.

The machine also has RAM which is "Random Access Memory". This is memory used to store programs, store data, run programs, etc. It is volatile and gets cleared if you do a hard reset. Anything that you add or change in your machine is stored to or changed in this memory.

Any memory cards that you add are in addition to this. You can store programs and data in the builtin storage or in the memory cards and they are not changed if you do a hard reset.

To see how much memory you have, go to Start>Settings> and there is a button for memory. It will show you how much is used of each type of memory.

actually it can be erased in a pinch and there are no issues with overuse. the ROM has a read/write life of 100,000 cycles (or something like that, nothing that should keep you from making the greatest use of it). the built in storage section is no different than a small SD card that has been welded to the axim, and which can, if necessary, provide a little extra room for bigger operating systems like WM2003.

Astounded is correct...
memory terminology these days has gotten complicated.

As far as the Axim is concerned, the part of the ROM that is available to you as builtin storage can be read and written to and changed to your heart's content and you likely won't wear it out.

The majority of ROM, that is where the operating system resides, can't be changed under normal use but can be rewritten by operating system updates of which Dell has issued 2 so far.

As far as memory terminology goes, Read Only Memory is not entirely correct since we just said it could be written to and changed. I'm not a hardware expert but I'll try a loose explanation of memory: Well years ago Read Only Memory was manufactured that way and could be read but never changed. Then there was ROM that could be written to after it was manufactured (PROM) and ROM that could be changed later on (EPROM). Now we have ROM that is easier to change. I don't know what the correct terminology is for it.
