I have a Nokia phone with an infrared port. I got a dialup account with an ISP. When I turn the port on my phone on and click connect on my Axim my phone just complains and says redialing, but it isn't dialing anything. Does anyone know if there are some dialing options I need to dial through my phone? (Perhaps I should check nokia.com as well.)
Thanks to anyone with helpful information.
Regards,
Jonathan Duncan
!! I love my Axim !!

So I looked on Nokia's website and found a PDF file for my phone (3360) and read it.
http://downloads.nokiausa.com/pcsuite/EN_pcsuite41.pdf
However, it doesn't tell me if there are any AT commands or extra dialing strings that I need to put into the Axim. (Perhaps I will check the Microsoft KB)
Any help is still appreciated.
Thanks,
Jonathan Duncan

I spoke today with several AT&T people and finally ended up speaking with a Nokia technician. As it turns out, AT&T does not support the connection of my phone (Nokia 3360) over their network. My phone requires a CSD connection which AT&T does not support. <_< Oh well, I guess I just need a different phone, but I like my phone. :(
So, what other options are out there for me? What are people using to connect to the Internet with their Axim's? What is good, what doesn't cost all that much to use? What CF cards do people like for this purpose? Perhaps this has been answered in another topic. I will look.

I use my Danger Sidekick to connect to thei internet on the road. My Wifi card in my Axim only gets used at home in my bedroom. Free networks abound apparently, just none near me.

I guess it depends on the GSM provider. I have a Nokia 6310i and have been accessing the internet w/out any problems thru GPRS and I/R so far.
All I have done is change the access point from wap to internet (and I go back to wap for using GPRS over the phone). You do not see anything dialing over the phone you just see it trying to make the GPRS connection and then the G which is for GPRS.
If you do use your phone for GPRS internet, there is a good chance that you'd be able to use the Ax with it. Here it is not the ISP but the GSM/Cellular provider which provides the service. You might want to check with them as well. Good luck

For those (like me) using AT&T as their carrier, these are the Nokia Phones compatible with the AT&T network for Internet connections:
GSM/GPRS
------------------
6590 - uses IR
8390 - uses IR
6310i - uses IR or data cable
7210 - uses IR or data cable
This info is from a Nokia tech rep.

Your best bet would be to use a GSM/GPRS phone and service plan as mentioned earlier, AT&T has some pretty good ones I think you can get 8MB for $19.99 and then 0.005 KB/ over

It sounds like you will need to migrate over to the AT&T GSM plan and get a phone that has GPRS capability (all the ones you listed have it) and then you should be able to get online with your Ax and the phone. However, it is not cheap.
GPRS is an always on connection and charges for the amount of data sent and recieved. You would need to buy MB of data. Scrolling the internet (even on the Ax), this would go real fast.
CSD is a dialup connection and charges you for the minutes used. So if you had free night and weekend calling you could get unlimited browsing during off-peak hours. The only catch is that AT&T doesn't support CSD so you are stuck with GPRS.
You could switch over to T-Mobile or Cingular (not 100% certain Cingular supports CSD, but T-Mobile does) and get any of those nokias you listed.

So, it seems that my options are, get a different phone or start looking into a nice CF card that will give me access to wireless networks.

The Sidekick would go along with the option to change my phone. What WiFi card do you use?

While doing some research on what exactly WiFi is I found this article and thought it might be interesting to share:
WiFi News
So I am still slightly confused about WiFi. It seems to just a name that describes hardware that allows wireless devices to connect to the Internet. Is this correct? According to some of the WiFi search sites out there I don't have any WiFi connectivity in my area yet. I assume that if I get a wireless network card and use if for the network at my office or at home I will be able to use that for WiFi once it comes to my area. Is my assumption correct?

I just want to say thanks for this thread. I have been looking into the AT&T GSM phones and wondering about how it all works. The axim/phone/service/etc... This thread has pretty much verified all of my assumptions/research. :D

The 3360 works on Cingular's network. The TDMA connection maxes out at 14.4 or 19.2 or something. Also, for $20 you can get a cingular data connect kit cd that has some dialing software and will dial to a Cingular supplied ISP. You do need to have the $6.99/mo mobile internet service activated.
Search for my thread at the PocketPCPassion.com forum for more info.
I don't use it anymore because I went with a t68i through t-mobile (bluetooth!) after my 3360 broke. Once configured properly, the 3360/Cingular solution worked fine.

Maybe this will help....
WiFi is generally used to refer to the 801.11x protocols used for wireless networking, including connectivity to the Internet. Primarily, it is used for small office networking due to short ranges that the signals can travel.
If you are looking for WiFi connectivity in public, it is possible that someone has found free connections in your area. This is called "warchalking," and there are many sites on the 'Net that list where free WiFi can be found. In response, many companies are beginning to offer public WiFi access at a cost.
Bottom line....you primarily will use WiFi for local connectivity, but the places where you will have public access to wireless networks (NOT through cell phones/cellular networks) is growing.

I use the Nokia 6310i also with Bluetooth CF card in the Ax. I started with just the IR port connection and went bluetooth for more mobility. So this phone does IR, Teathered by cable and Bluetooth.
BTW I have expensed out the new Phone. I previously had the biggest minute Plan on ATTW TDMA service and by changing to GSM/GPRS I am saving $40.00 per month on the service. That makes Return On Investment about 5 months. That was an easy sell to the bean counters.
Regards,
Frank
