Where can I buy GPS units (for CF card slot in AXIMs) in the GTA (Toronto, Ontario, Canada area)?

Do they come with Canadian city maps or do I have to purchase them separately?

Thanks and regards,

Sabesh.

You'll get a better answer at GPSPassion. There are product reviews and forums there for users. Generally you can get the receivers and maps separately, if you wish, or bundled. Mapopolis has a nice combo, and I've heard the maps for Canada are reasonably up to date. Lots of Canadians visit gpspassion, so you should get an answer there.

Sabesh,

Also, there's this option from HandheldCanada:

Pretec CompactGPS

It's a CompactFlash GPS device and, especially seeing as it's sold from a Canadian company, it will work in Canada.

For maps, personally I use Mapopolis (http://www.mapopolis.com/index.jsp) - I live in Western Canada and I have full maps of BC that work perfectly, and would work perfectly, with a GPS device.

You can purchase the various Map Packs by going to their map store

Just enter in your info and you'll be able to purchase the various maps for your various location.

I've heard a LOT about Mapopolis, and it's the best map program out there. I'd suggest you take Jake's advice and also check GPSPassion, better to have as many different opinions as you can get, I say! :)

NP!

Let us know if you find anything... actually, especially let me know ;) I'm in Canada and I'm looking to get a GPS device...

Also, keep an eye on the "Hot Deals" section, I'm going to be posting there if I can find a really good deal on a good quality GPS that can be found *in* Canada (Yay, no duty!!)

Yes, please post if you find a Great White North Deal, eh. I'm in Buffalo, so a quick hop across the Peace Bridge and I'm there. I think you can declare and bring back up to $200 US and not pay duty.

andsoitgoes and Mattman,

I ended up getting the Deluo CF GPS when it went on pre-order (USD$139). I had to pay 15% taxes on it when I collected it 'though.

This unit is an OEM version of the popular Holux CF GPS. It even comes with Holux's setup CD and drivers.

I'm impressed by it's power saving circuitry. I hardly notice any excessive battery drain on it.

Getting a GPS FIX in Mississauga ranges from 2 mins to 15 minutes. But, after a fix is obtained, it's hard to shake it off. So, I usually turn it on 15 minutes before travelling.

Here's the link to Deluo:

Here's the link to the review of the Holux CF GPS unit:

I also took up your suggestion and signed up for Mapopolis. I got the Navigator bundle that includes voice navigation, which is very helpful.

I also ordered Mapopolis Platinum Place Guides, but they don't have guides for Canada yet. However, all US states have guides which I can use when I travel down south.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Cheers,

Sabesh.
