Links in start menu, etc.

After reading a few threads recently a question occurred to me...

The items in the start menu pulldown, and a few other places on the Axim like the home screen, are links in a folder. Those links can be added to, deleted, changed, etc. so it seems that they are in RAM and not ROM, is that correct? And if they are in RAM how do they get there in the first place? They are there when the Axim is "born" and they are still there if you do a hard reset.

Here are my guesses:
1) They are put into RAM by the system when it first wakes up after a hard reset. After that you can change them as you wish.
2) They are really in ROM but in a part of ROM that is accessible and changeable like the "builtin storage" area.

Anybody thought about this or know what the true story is?
