Work vs. The Internet

Forgive me if this is a dumb question: what's the difference between selecting "The Internet" and "Work" in the Configure Network Adapter settings (e.g. under Settings>Connectivity>Wireless).

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe "Work" is intended to just connect you the network for stuff like filesharing/printing, and "The Internet" is intended for the internet.

I think that "work" is connecting to a lan and "internet" is to dial up to get on the net. If you have a wifi card on your axim you want everything to be set under "work"

This whole thing is such as mess.

Think of each one as a container for a bunch of settings. So you have your Internet container that contains your settings for connecting to The Internet. You have your Work container that holds your relevant work stuff (proxy server for example).

THEN.... you tell your PPC that when it needs to access The Internet to use the container Internet/Work. Whichever one is right. You also tell it that when it needs to Work to use the container Internet/Work... Whichever one is right. Then you tell it "My Network card is currently using the settings from Container Work/Internet... "

So.... If your settings for Work and Internet are actually all the same you can set them to work, work, work or internet,internet,internet.. It will then use the same settings for both Internet traffic and Work traffic.

Or... If you use a proxy while at work and no proxy at home, then configure the proxy under Work settings and no proxy under Home settings. You would then use Internet, Work, Internet at home and Work, Work, Work at Work...

Make sense?

Thanks for the info. I'm still a bit confused. In particular, I'm not sure what you mean by "set them to work, work, work" - do you mean the setting on each of the separate network adapters? And where in the setting do I change the proxy etc? TIA for any help.

Nope, set each of the three options to work. There's not "right or wrong" way to do this. Well, the wrongs ways don't work for you and the right ways do work for you. But what works for you might not work for someone else if their config differs.

work, work, work or works for most people.

To enter a proxy server, where on of your options is set for work, click Modify and there is a tab called Proxy Settings.
