Ted,

Thanks for the response. I ended up getting yet another device (T-Mobile Sidekick) and just am going that route. I really do like the sidekick.

Nextel + Axim

If I understand this - All I need is the Gomadic cable and then purchase the additional $15.00 monthly package from nextel and the phone becomes the modem.

How about the i60 Phone?
The phone won't just make the connection without adding the web function?
The only additional charge is the minutes?
How is the connect speed?
It uses the POP3 Mail?
Browse the web? - i.e. Yahoo?

Thanks all.

Yep, the Gomadic cable and the additional Nextel dialup package is what you need. I will work for a i60 (the Gomadic cable is compatible for i60/i90c/i95cl).

I don't think you need the Nextel Premium web pack to use it as a wireless modem.

You will have to pay monthly for the dialup package and any minutes that you incur.

The connection speed is slow as you max speed is around 14.4 to 19.2 Kbs.

You can use your ISP Pop email for email retrieval. This works fine. I basically just get the headers first and decide what messages I want to download.

You can also browse the web but it is slow browsing sites that is net mobile friendly.

Nextel i60/Axim5

Thanks all,

I've got all the parts and all the settings in place, but can't connect. PDA says it's dialing, but nothing shows up on the phone.

I find this hard to troubleshoot as I don't know where the problem is. Is the PDA really trying to dial? I don't think so as it says it's dialing even when not connected to anything. So it doesn't appear any signal is getting to the phone through the Gomadic cable.

Any ideas on who to contact to troubleshoot? Could there be something wrong with the PDA software?

thanks

Dave

I would like to confirm what is supposed to be happening but I am waiting for my new cable for my Nextel i730. I should get it this week. If your phone is saying that it is trying to connect, it is most likely not the cable. It is either the phone or the PDA setup. If your ISP setup is correct on your phone, then I would check with Nextel first. Make sure that you have Nextel Online Dialup service activated on your phone. Also check your baud rate. The proper baud rate on Nextel phones is 19200. Make sure that you phone is using a baud rate of 19200. Also goto your modem profile settings and select the baud rate to be 19200.

Nextel & Axim

This actually works. It took a tremendous effort on the part of Nextel, Gomadic, and this web site - but I'm actually connecting.

I think perhaps the thing that made the difference was updating the ROM on the dell to A02 version. Of course, that wipes everything else clean, but I got to the finish line.

So far so good.

Nextel i60 ($10 per month on line fee)
Gomadic Cable
Dell Axim 5 (updated ROM version) - 27MB download.

Good luck.
