If your Axim can see the internet via your network, then it should also be able to see any network shares on other networked machines. Have you created any such shares on your other PC's? For example, if you go to your main desktop PC (on the network I assume) and double-click on My Computer, then right-click on the C: drive, you can select "Sharing" from the menu and create a network share by checking the box to share the resource and assigning a share name. Then in File Explorer on the Axim, tap on "Open" at the bottom and enter the network path to the new share. The path will be "\\MachineName\ShareName" (no quotes). That should allow the Axim to see the location on the desktop PC.
You can do the same to share a printer connected to your desktop PC over the network and use HP's mobile printing utility to print directly from the Axim over the wireless.
As for other PC's seeing the Axim on the network, no can do. The Axim does not support creaing any sharable resources, so other networked PC's can not map drives or access the ram storage in the Axim.
As for using the CF card in your laptop with an adapter, should work fine.
