Writing area

I'm having a little problem with the writing area- it comes up when it is supposed to, but just now, I was looking at my calendar, and there it was. It wouldn't have been so bad if I was writing something, but I was just looking, and having it there limits my viewing area. Is there a way to:
1. make it come up only when summoned
and/or
2. make it go away when I want it to.

Pressing the little Pen icon in the lower right hand corner of the screen toggles the writing area on and off.
