Question New Axim Owner Questions

I'll be getting my Advanced Axim (first pocket pc) in a couple days and have a few questions. Should I store the programs I want in the main memory? Should I store data (word files etc.) on the SD card? Should I leave the CF slot available for hardware accessories? Which card should I have when the Axim arrives. Any additional setup pointers would be helpful.

I tend to keep the main memory free. I put almost everything on my sd card (simpletech 256). I have a cf wifi card (truemobile on dells website.) and that works great. runs fast. no problems. I know they tell you the sd is just for data. but as long as you don't get one of the notorious sandisk youll be fine

Edit: Before I get flamed I have been told sandisk has fixed thier issue with the dell axim, but....... I still won't recomend them as I feel they burned me.

I personally use a Lexar 256MB SD card for storage. My CF slot is used for accessories, like my Socket CF WiFi card.

I was planning to get the CF wifi card from Dell. So I should use the sd card for programs and data. Should I get a 256 sd card? What makers are best in the Axim? Does that leave the built-in memory free for some reason?

I have a 128MB SD card for programs and some ebooks, and have only used about 20% of it. I have a 512 CF card filled with MP3 and other stuff. I have seen it reported than Sandisk SD might give problems.
Putting programs in external cards don't leave all the RAM unused. All programs you are running will use a portion of the RAM when they are running. And many programs put some files in RAM even if you install it to a card.

I had three faulty Scamdisk cards and won't buy another one. Ditto, I don't care if they fixed their problems or not.

I have a Lexar and it works beautifully.

simpletech is a very good brand for the ax, I (i dont have one but) have heard that panasonic is also good. Hope that helps. I would recommend a 256, plenty of space for me. I know they have 512 cards and are working on a gig but I don't watch movies or listen to mp3 on my ax so I don't need that. If you are interested in movies or mp3's then get a larger one or a couple of 256's. they fill up fast like that.

Edit: Howard2k Love that quote!!:D ;)

Exclamation

I think I'm getting the picture. I'm a college prof and a psychologist. I'll use the sd for my few applications and my Word, Excel files. Things I want to have all the time. I'll use a cf card for times when I might want to take pictures or a wmv video I made of the kids to share at a family get together. I guess I'll get the Dell wifi card since I have a Dell computer and it will be easier that way. I'll get either simpletech or lexar.

I ordered a DSI holster and a Brando screen protector. should be here a day or two before the Axim. ANY ADDITIONAL ADVICE AS I BEGIN?

Personally, I too just received my Axim with the dreaded Sacndisk SD(256) card along with a Scandisk CF(256) card and I have not experienced any of the problems that have been discussed in the other forums regarding the Scandisk cards.

I have several applications stored on the SD card and up till now no problems. I did however, purchase Storage Tools and formated each card with FAT 32 before storing any applications on the cards, so this may be the reason that they work.

Though I'm wondering if the new fix for the WM 2003 that Dell put forth corrected some of these issues? I guess time will tell....

But hey this is just my two cents worth...........

I forgot to add that I leave my CF slot open for other accessories and is not always used with the CF card.
