Format SD/SDIO card?

A couple of questions I need answered. Are SD and SDIO cards/slots different and, if so, what's the diff? Also, do these type cards need formatting as do CF cards?

the Axim has a SD Slot that is not able to do IO functions. Other manufacturers have enabled this for their SD Slots. That means that the Axim slot will read and write to SD cards BUT will NOT be able to be used for wireless sd cards, lan SD cards or any other functions besides reading and writing to SD cards.

I no longer have an Axim, but an HP2215 w/wm2k3. Thanks for telling me the difference.

Do I have to format the SD card like a CF card?
