How do revision numbers work?

Does any one know how Dell uses its revision numbers? I bought my first Axim off eBay.com and it was R06 tehn i had problems updateing it to the R03 so they had to send me a new Axim and it was labled R02, now my firend also bout one before the one that i got on ebay and his was R05.. They dont seem to follow any logical order. Any one have any clue when looking at update what is better a lower number or a higher one. the new dells with WM2003 have R04/05 I'm personaly lost.......

Are you confusing hardware and software revisions? Sounds like it..

Well the number that is on the back of the machine and the rom updates numbers are they seperate? i though the number on the back of the Dell was teh ROM Revision number

No. The ROM is software. The one on the back is the hardware revision.
