How about some more information. Connecting through the cradle? wifi? infra red? What OS? What version of AS? Have you rebooted? Do you have a NIC in the PPC?

I got my new axim 400 last Thursday and am having problems with my PC recognising it through ActiveSync - I keep getting messages on my PC saying a usb device has malfunctioned and to replace the device. Then sometimes I put the axim in the cradle and it starts syncronising only to lose the connection after a few minutes. I put a help call in to Dell technical support two days ago but have heard nothing - anyone know if they even send out acknowledgements? It's very frustrating as this is my first PDA and I'm really keen start using it.
I don't know whether your reply was directed at me or Gooch (or both of us?) but thanks. I actually have the companion cd which only arrived last week so presumably the drivers I've installed are already the latest?
Star did well in pointing to that file, even if you have the companion CD. To make sure you are connecting properly, open up the Device Manager on the PC and then put the Ax in the cradle. You should see the Dell Serial USB Device show up in the devices list under USB. If not, then the Dell drivers are NOT installed and the file needs to be used. Some folks had problems with the drivers not installing properly when the original Ax's were out last Winter.
Also make sure any firewall software you have is disabled during the installation. You can then reactivate the firewall and write a rule to allow the Axim to sync.
And upgrade to Activesync 3.7. As J said in MIB, "Damn!"
Thanks for your replies - oddly enough, the connection sprang into life a couple of hours ago and I've been playing around downloading themes - well you've got to start somewhere! I'm still getting the error message but a bit of jiggling of the axim in the cradle can get the connection again. I'll follow up your suggestions though. Thanks again.
Have you tried a different USB port? Not all USB ports are equal. Also, make sure the Axim is fully seated in the cradle. When mine is in there right, there is no wiggle room. It goes all the way down to the bottom, and requires more force than you might expect to seat fully.
Have sorted out the problem.
I think it was something to do with the partnership.
In the end i soft resetted and fixed the problem.
I also installed 3.7
