It's all your fault!

I only joined a week or so ago with plans to get an Axim by Xmas, but "Oh No" you said, dont wait, get one by Halloween you said....
So yesterday this turned up:

Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC.

- MS Windows Mobile 2002
- Intel X-Scale Processor at 400Mhz
- 64Mb SDRAM Memory
- 48Mb ROM Memory
- Integrated CF and Secure Digital Memory Slots
- 3.5" TFT Colour screen
- USB Charging/syncing cradle
- 256Mb Compact Flash Card (worth £50)
- Proporta Aluminium carry case (worth £30)

I got a guy on Ebay to stop the bidding for £200 delivered.
It's brand new and I am still figuring it out. Well i said there would be questions and here's the first:
When I swithed it on the battery at the top of the screen was 100% the batter at the bottom was 90% so I charged it up overnight and found this morning it was now on 80%?
Does the Axim have to be on to charge the battery, I turned it off with the power button at the top?:rolling:

Are you sure you placed the Axim correctly on the cradle ? You have to make sure the "Dell" logo lights up.....

Other than that, it doesnt matter anyway, it comes on by itself, and yes that is the ON/OFF button.....

With the unit switched on and plugged in, go to the power settings. Does it show the battery as charging?

Maybe try plugging power in without the cradle.

Also, you say upper and lower batteries, by that do you mean main and backup battery? Maybe, if it's the lower one as you say (backup batt), it might need replacing?

You could be right Swanny, do they not last that long?
I was referring to the upper/lower batteries as they appear on the Dell screen. I believe it is the backup we wre talking about.

I noticed you were on 2002 - Have you done all the ROM updates? I think that one of the version updates addressed the battery monitoring issue...Both batteries

I've got 2003 and have no issues what so ever with battery level...

I've read posts elsewhere here and have had similar experiences with a laptop, where if the main battery is flat or removed from the device that the backup battery is used and this happens quite fast. Possibly the main battery was removed but the backup battery left in when it was sent to you?

I beleive that the Dell backup batt is a throw item used to keep the contents of ram only when a user changes batteries.

btw, I have 2002 rom A02 and it "seems" to read the batt level ok.

Both batteries were inserted.
The main battery reads 100%
I'm just looking into the Rom update, but being on a Mac at work is proving a bit tricky.

I vaguely remember that, when I was on A00, I did notice some weird monitoring of the backup battery levels.....
Since the main battery is OK and full, you shouldnt have any major problems ;) If the backup battery doesnt charge, then I would first apply A03, then check the battery monitoring tool, and then -if the battery obviously has problems- I would replace it.

However, replacing the backup battery (which is just a small flat battery), means that you will lose all data in the main memory. So, a full backup is necessary prior to this ;)

If you do need to replace the backup battery, make sure that you leave your main battery in during the switch & you will not lose anything.

Even removing the main battery could be reason enough to make a full backup. Removing the backup battery (even though the main is still on) is also a very good reason to make a full backup.......

He might indeed not lose any data, but a backup of the data is strongly recomended.....
