Wondering if anyone is having success connecting to a XP desktop with a terminal services session. Mine just "times out" each attempt, although I can connect with no problem to a Win2000 server running terminal services.

I am doing this and it works great. Two items I discovered:

1) The ID you use to connect with must be already setup on XP Pro and must have a password with it. If you have your XP Pro machine setup with a single user with no password (so it just boots up without the Welcome screen) then Terminal Services won't work.

2) I increased my network packet size to improve performance over the WiFi network connection to eliminate the timeout errors. This requires a registry tweak and is described in a tutorial on this site at:

http://www.aximsite.com/cgi-bin/coranto/do...VuVXXmlwAl.html

I have my office PC set to require CTRL-ALT-DEL to log in and my home PC set to use the Welcome screen to select the user you want. Terminal Services from my Axim works great on both.

You also need to make sure that you have Remote Desktop enabled on the XP Pro box. Go to System Properties and the Remote tab. Click the Allow users to connect remotely to this computer check box. You may also want to check the permissions. I forgot to do this on my XP Pro box at work and I had a project I was working on at home and couldn't get connected, kept timing out. What a bummer! Hope this helps.

It works great for me. Only problem is it messes up with my XP desktop everytime I use it. It changes the icon position, window size etc. Any suggestions to tackle this?

I believe there is a utility that let you "save" the icon positions on your desktop so that when they get messed up, restoring to the original state is just matter of a few mouse clicks.. Can't remember which app it was though...

I tried terminal services to connect to one of web servers at my work and it worked great. However, I didn't like the fact that I had to keep scrolling... One good use of this might be rebooting the machine. Could come very handy for network engineers. Imagine receving an email through your Blackberry that one of the web server is not responding while you are having an important meeting. Instead of leaving the meeting room, you can just connect to the server and reboot all from your Axim!!! ;)

Other than that, I don't know why I would want to use it... Maybe to copy files... maybe...

Terminal Services allows you to control a computer from another terminal. In other words you could use your Axim to control your desktop. I know what you are thinking... on that tiny screen? Well, the Axim has some cool shortcuts to navigate you home computers resolution. This software is included with your Axim to connect to another system which has the host software installed. All Windows XP systems have this available natively with one variation to keep in mind. In Windows XP Home Edition you can only connect to another system running Termial Services ( or Remote Desktop as it is dubbed in XP), in Windows XP Pro you can connect to another system and/or use another system to connect to the XP Pro system. Windows 2000 can also have these services installed.

Hope this helps.

I use it while in meetings so that I can access files on my desktop PC or send files from the desktop to the network printer which is in the conference room most of the meetings are held in. It is great that I can be sitting in the room and use my Axim to send a report from my desktop to the printer right there in the corner.
