Mad ACtiveSync!!!!!

Alright, I've been through ALL the "ActiveSync problem" threads, and could not for the life of me figure out what the hell is going on here........

Suddenly, for no apparent reason at all, ActiveSync stopped working. AS will come up in Axim once I place it on the cradle, but it will "Disconnect" almost immediately (after about 1sec). And of course the AS on the PC does not find any connected devices, and produces "Sync Error".

Changing USB ports, soft-reseting Axim on and off the cradle, reseting the PC and fiddling will all options in the AS Options window did not produce any results. Practically the Axim is locked out of my PC

I really, REALLY, REALLY dont understand why. It was working like a charm for months now, and suddenly it decides it doesnt want to work. The only "strange" thing that happened yesterday was that my SD Card was -again- corrupted while the Axim was on the cradle. I reformated it, placed the Axim on the cradle again, synced just fine and started working again. Some time in the afternoon, I tried to sync again, and this problem surfaced

Anyone any ideas ?

I know how you feel. When this has happened to me, the thing that ALWAYS worked was to sync using wifi. After syncing wirelessly a few times, AS would seem to get back to normal. If you don't have wifi, the only thing I can suggest is to keep trying (which is what I did) or maybe do a system restore to a point where it was working fine.

Good Luck.

Well, since I dont use System Restore, there is no other option than to do it the hard way......

Whats more strange, whenever I change USB ports, the PC recognises the Axim as a new device, it says that it was installed *correctly*, but then AS fires up on the Axim, and immediately disconnects.........
I mean, COME ON!!! Is it that hard to create a little piece of f**** program that can sync the Axim with the PC ? I guess now we know why Palms will NEVER cease to exist and have a big piece of the market......

Also, it couldnt be anything on the Axim, because I have disabled everything that was running (Icbar and TurboTray), but still..........

Anyone any ideas ? I'm sure lots of you guys have faced the same problem.......

Mine did that to me on my home PC (I normally sync at work) and I thought it was because I was using a USB hub instead of directly connecting to the PC. If you are using a hub you might try directly connecting it the PC instead. Also, I hook mine up to the electric charger when I sync at home now and it seemed to have stopped the problem of disconnecting. Don't understand it since the battery had a full charge anyway but whatever works.

Well, uninstalled and reinstalled AS 3.7, but -guess what- no good results whatsoever

I'm guessing that it has something to do with the Axim portion of the AS, because this is what seems to be causing the problem. The PC recognises that the Axim has been connected, and the Axim appears as a new device, but it has already disconnected from the Axim side :crooked:

I'm guesssing that nothing sort of a hard reset could "cure" this now. And, since I have the option of upgrading to PPC2003, maybe I'll speed up the process, and go through with it right away........

I really hate being forced in making such rush decisions......

TheAce, keep the language cleaner, please. This is a "Family" site. :D

Have you changed your firewall? It sounds to me like the firewall is knocking down the TCP/IP connection. It might also be that somehow the Dell USB drivers have gotten corrupted. Try reinstalling them before you resort to a hard reset. I seriously doubt a hard reset will fix the problem, it sounds more like a PC-side problem.

I had to uninstall ActiveSync and remove all the registry settings that were left behind before I could get it working.

JakeRich, I almost never curse (much less on a public forum), but this is really ridiculous......

As for the firewall thing, there is none ;) Its just the Axim connecting to my home PC, 's all. There isnt a hub, just straight to the USB ports. However, you might be on to something about the USB drivers. The PC is not a Dell, however I will clean-remove the USB drivers in order for XP to install them again.

Removing all registry keys and values for ActiveSync also sounds like something that might work. I did this twice, but I didnt mess with the registry, just a plain Uninstall. Probably try both these things when I get home, and we'll see where this leads......

I appreciate the frustration you are feeling. A/S is a difficult program, much more complex than it really needs to be. I'll never understand why M$ chose to use TCP/IP as the protocol, given that most of us use TCP/IP for our networking, but that's Little Billy Gates for you. He ALWAYS knows what's best for us. :crooked:

From the symptoms, it sounds like something is breaking the connection. I doubt it's on the Ax, it's much more likely the PC. With no firewall, then the only thing left is the USB port and Dell drivers. BTW, XP has a built in firewall so even if you haven't bought a third party suite, it still may be getting in the way. Just make sure it's disabled.

Well, although the built-in Firewall of WinXP is activated on my ADSL connection, it was always like that (i.e even when AS was working properly). That didnt change, so AS shouldnt have changed its behaviour as well.......I will deactivate it, although this "Disconnect" problem happens even when the firewall isnt running......

Most probably bet right now is the clean-uninstall of the USB drivers and AS, and then reinstalling both. Since its seems to be because of pure luck that AS stopped working, I guess it will also need pure luck to get back on track......

As for the AS and the way it -doesnt- work , I will only say that I was programming little synching programs through the Serial port even when I was taking my first steps in Turbo C. I really dont think it should be THAT hard to create a decent synching program for PPCs......

This has happened to me several times.
I sync both at home and work - both IP networks but one was NT40 and other XP. Then work upgraded to XP (finally) and sync would do what you are saying.

Try:

1 - soft reset AX and reboot PC - sometimes my AX just won't sync and resetting both fixes whatever went wrong.

2 - in Activesync on PC (if running XP), set it to run in win2K mode:
a) right click on activesync icon and select 'properties'
b) select 'compatibility' tab in properties screen
c) check the box under 'compatibility mode' and select win2k.
d) click 'apply' and 'ok'

The second option fixed it for me at work. Not sure what the problem there was since both PCs are XP now and home never gives me a problem.:rolling:

You should go for it - I volunteer to beta test it for you!
