Backup Battery
Why does my X5 keep telling me the backup battery is low? I just replaced it. It said everything was good. Then all of a sudden the message came up, "Backup battery low!" Then for a few days no message. Now I get the message again.
I lost all of my memory at one point. My main battery went dead, I couldn't get to the charger in time. I lost all of the data and everything on my X5. Where did the backup battery go? Isn't the backup suppposed prevent that from happening?
I also did a backup prior to all of this happening, the backup didn't work either after I charged the main battery. So, now my next question is what is the point of making a backup if it isn't recognized by the machine it was made from?
One last question (for now) If the backup battery is dead and I change the main battery to one that is full. Will I lose everything still? I think I would.
Thanks,

I have the same problem. It all started when I dropped it one day, and all of a sudden the backup battery does not work. I even fiddled with the contacts to no avail...

This is a known issue for the x5. Search the site for other users experiences and their fixes (such as cleaning the contacts and battery, adjusting the contacts, adding a little piece of paper).

zacksba is right.
Slightly bend upwards the spring contacts which connect to the bottom of the battery and bend out the contact which connects to the side. Then carefully insert the battery making sure that all the spring contacts connect firmly to the battery, place a thin piece of card on top of the battery and replace the cover.
Also make sure that the battery is wiped very clean.

Davrol,
I'll give that a try. I tried bending the contacts, that worked for a while. Then I read somewhere on this site about putting a a piece of electrical tape under the door where the backup battery is. That worked for a couple of days. Maybe, if I try them all, it will work forever. Who knows?
Thanks for the response.

He said that in the first post.
Here are the issues I remember from the early days of the X5:
1) Early X5 ROMs had a problem reporting the BUB levels accurately - if you have PPC02, you should upgrade to ROM A04 (for the advanced model) or A03 (for the basic);
2) Many 'new' 2032CR batteries have low voltage output when measured on a voltmeter - don't skimp on a cheap brand/buy from someplace that doesn't leave batteries on the shelf for 3 years and still sell them;
3) wipe the battery with alcohol to remove all oils from your fingers (but make sure it's completely dry before putting it in);
4) bending the contacts gently and making sure they are clean for a good contact has already been mentioned.

Oh yeah, I replaced the battery. In fact, sometimes the power level says 100%, then it will say 30%, then it will say 80%, then it will say 0%, then it will say 90%. I think my X5 is replacing its own battery. I just deal with it and make sure the main battery is fully charged. I replace the main battery when it gets low, after I check to make sure the backup battery is ok. I have two extended life and one regular battery.

Mine X5 has been doing the same thing - I have read through these posts, cleaned the battery, replaced the battery with a higher priced, and newer date on it. I raised the posts a little, a put a little slip of paper over the battery, under the cover. It went right to a full backup battery. Dang, if I had known that would work before, I wouldn't have purchased about 10 new batteries! Thanks for all the information. I will continue to monitor the levels over the next week.

I had the same...
problem with percentages varying frequently. So I went out and got a new battery, the cheap one, and haven't had a problem with it since and it has been about 2 weeks now. I will definately slip in a thin card to help keep pressure on the bat.
