So i thought it would be cool to download and use the Universal Remote software I found on Handango. Well first off let me say that the software has a very limited amount of brands :( but I was able to try it on my TV and it worked fine as long as i was no more then 3 feet away from my TV. Is that pretty standard for PPC IR? What is different about PPC IR then the IR on my TV remote? Any thoughts into this would be greatly appreciated.
I also tried it for a couple days, and my range was between 4-5 feet, but the problem I found was that I needed to be straight in front of the tv, I couldn't be at an angle or else it wouldn't work, really weird.

As a general rule, the IR ports on PPCs are narrow-beam, short-range units. Someday I'll get one of my electrical engineering buddies here at 'Tech to help me come up with a booster unit, maybe even one good enough to market. Until then...it's *still* a cool gadget.
Here is something I sent to PDAWIN about the same issue...there reply follows after my question...

Dear Glen,
thank you for your email. We prepare a new version of TV remote to support
Dell Axim , HP iPAQ 39xx, H19xx series and CF PDA-ir extender.
Beyond the fact that all handheld have limited IR distance unless they were designed with the intention to be used as a remote (sony models). Then it all really depends on the device your trying to control.
I've found that early to mid 90's electronics are better at picking up the Axim IR signal. I get about 20 feet from my RCA television Circa 92. Same goes for my VCR. But with the reciever, DVD player, DSS, Tivo. I can barely get 2-3 feet.
The total remote will not work with the Axim according to their technical support. Here is their responce when I emailed them asking if it would work with the Axim:
"The short answer is no. The Dell does not have high enough quality IRdA built in nor does it possess a high quality audio output needed to support our device. The Dell cut some corners to bring the pricedown and this is where they cut a few of them."
Kinda sucks .. I thought the Total Remote looked awesome.

Sounds like a weak excuse to me. The audio on the Axim is loud enough, and has pretty good fidelity. I would rephrase the answer to be:
"We built a really cheap audio-IR converter, and make demands from the audio well beyond what is reasonable. We had to cut corners somewhere, so we blame failure on the PDA manufacturer. It's too hard/expensive to bother to fix."
