This is my first PDA and its a Axim X5. It is the 400 mHZ model with 64/48 Ram/Rom. After that the confusion factor comes in. I read every page of the Newbie and X5 forum and they all talk about Pocket PC 2002 and Pocket PC 2003 or Windows Mobile 2003.
Here is my delemia:
If I tap the Settings - System - About: Shows: Pocket PC Version 3.0.11171, Intel PXA250
If I tap the Settings - System - System Info: Shows: Processor Speed - 400MHz, Ram and Rom Size - 64/48MB, Rom Version A00 (11110200EN)
On the body, underneath the battery, it shows:
36128347093
Service Tag - GLHXXXX Express Service Code (Not real service tag)
TW-00X136-70161-2C3-AA71
Rev A04 PDA
Dell No. HC01U Axim X5
Can someone tell what I have, an A00 or A04 or What?
It was sold as having Pocket PC 2003 but appears to be PPC 2002?
Assuming that I have to upgrade to PPC2003, what should I be seeing?
Here's my next confusion factor:
I was tapping the screen and roaming the different areas of the X5, when all a sudden the little 1/4" square with a color wheel showed up and I could not do anything until the colored segments counted down. What's happening? I have not read of its mention on this site nor in the X5 user's guide. I changed the backup battery as per the instuctions and charged the mail battery for at least 4 hours before "playing around".
Here's my next confusion factor:
I put in a 1GB SD card(Sandisk) and the X5 slowed down, the display took at least 10 seconds to finish when I pushed the "Home" button. I pulled the card out and the speed of the display appeared "normal". You thoughts. Please?
I appreciate any information that you will be willing to share. Thanks
First off, just to be sure u bought it with a clean install, hard reset it by holding in the power button and the reset button. Then follow the directions to clear memory and align the stylus. That will put u back to factory state, if not done already.
The color wheel square is like the hourglass mouse icon on windows. It just means wait a sec for a task it is doing. It shouldnt do it randomly, just after youve asked your device to do something that takes a lot of cpu, etc.
It sounds like you have A00. You also have ppc 2002. Any roms from a00-a04 are ppc2002 and its minor upgrades. A05 is wm2003. If u got it sold to u saying it had 2003, i would tell your seller it came with ppc2002, and try to get a free upgrade cd from them. But if that doesnt work, ebay is one of the only places that seems to still be selling the x5 2003 upgrade. If u upgrade to 2003 you will be able to use more modern versions of some apps, and possibly some higher capacity cf/sd cards.

Pocket PC Version 3.0.11171 = WinCE 3.0 = PPC02 and A00 is the first released version. You can download ROM A04 from Dell's site (note, the website has the upgrade labeled A02 but that's the number of the upgrade file, it installs ROM A04 of PPC02). You can only upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003 (the correct name for Pocket PC 2003) by purchase of an upgrade CD, which Dell no longer sells. People were selling the upgrade file on eBay but I'm sure these are not legal (if that matters to you).
The spinning wheel shows up when the device is reading memory. Look on the sd card and there will be a 0-byte file name ignore_my_docs that is automatically added to any memory that does not have a My Documents folder. This file causes the device to read the whole card looking for PPC files and can severely slow it down. Use a file explorer to create a My Documents folder and then delete the ignore... file (do it in that order or the file will be recreated).

There are two A04 ROMs for the X5:
PPC02 A04 (the best version of PPC02 for the X5 advanced)
WM03 A04 (the crappy version of WM03 first released by Dell - Pedah, you should have gotten an updated version of WM03 (A05). It was briefly on Dell's website but because people were pirating it, Dell pulled and and was only supplying it via CD. I'm sure it's too late to get it from Dell but you can probably find it on eBay. This is different from the Upgrade CD which is for taking the device from PPC02 to WM03).

It's allright Ike, I fired it up today, after along time in the cupboard, to answer a question. I learnt allot today though :approve: I've got the original 2003 CD. I don' use the x5 it's just for reference, but now I'll have to find the upgrade to SE
There was no upgrade for the X5 to WM03SE (ROM A05 is still WM03).

Many thanks to you and ikehiker!!!
This is really valuable info since there seems to be a lot of these being sold on ebay. I did buy mine on ebay and will follow all everyone's directions. Thanks again to all.
How to Do Everything With Your Axim Handheld by Derek Ball in paperback you could get for a couple of bucks and is pretty helpful for beginning x5 users.

First, thanks again for the info.
I tried to use the file explorer to create the file, BUT the X5 is not seeing the 1 GB card, so I got out of that and back to Start, put in the 64 MB SD card that came with the x5 and tried it again, same problem, not being seen. Tried to save a test word doc to the card but it wasn't there. Do I have to format these cards? If so, how, when all you have is the X5 and the card? If I get a CF memory card, will I have to format that? The users guide just says " Put it in don't force". Yes, I did do the hard reset before trying to create the My Documents folder. Also, in settings, system, it says SD in use, but in the storage card, it just says built-in storage. Maybe I better get busy on the upgrade, Yes? Have a great day.
Every card I've ever had has worked straight out of the package but they can be formatted. The easiest way is with a card reader attached to a PC but there are programs you can get for PPCs (I've never used them and don't remember any of their names off hand, so someone else will need to add this info). Assuming you are inserting the cards properly, it sounds like there may be a problem with the slot on the X5 and upgrading to WM03 will probably not solve the problem. If it is a software problem (unlikely in my opinion), a hard reset would solve it as well as a system upgrade.

I took the 1Gb back to Staples, they formated it to FAT 32 and made the MyDocuments folder. Plugged it into the X5 and its now listed in the memory as a SD Card. Stange, I thought it would have worked by just plugging in, too. That's OK, at least I will know what to do again with a SD or CF card. Thanks Again!!
