Newbee trying to use CF card

Hi Gang,
Just got an axim x5.
The active sync (vs 4.5) from the CD, installed ok, usb driver recognized.
But Active sync cannot recognize the device.
using xp home.
no firewall running.
The unit is connected via usb.
The activesync connect display shows USB available

So, I'm guessing that:
1. The PC did connect and talk with the device otherwise the proper driver would not have been selected during (Found Hardware) install.

2. This means that active sync accessing the usb hub is probably the problem.

SO.........
I decided to try getting something into the x5 via its CF card.
I got a SanDisk CF to USB reader.
Works great... I dragged a pdf file into the CD card.
Then put the CD card back into the x5.

Now, ( I know this is really dumb!!!! ), but I cannot figure out how to get to that pdf file that I have in there via the x5 functions.

Any suggestions?
I've heard of people putting mp3s into the CF cards and playing them.
How do you access an mp3 file or PDF file?

A monkey proof step-by-step would be sweet, but any response would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!

Hi

to play the mp3 files; a couple of ways, the easiest would be to open the windows media player, go to playlist, highlight the song and press the "play" symbol along the bottom bar.

for the .pdf files, do you have adobe acrobat reader installed? If so, then open it, it should go to a page titled "Open" and will show all the .pdf files available on your devise.

as for the first one, try re-installing the software(?). no doubt someone with more knowledge will give you the right answer to that.

enjoy your axim x5. I just recycled mine to my son after many years of faithful service.

Thank you Paul.
I has assumed that the unit would read PDF files.
For programs it has
Internet Explore
Microsoft Reader
Pocket word
windows media

I changed the file from a PDF file to a text (.txt) file.
Can I open that one?
If so, how do I find it, and with what program?
Thanks so much!!!!

AH!!
I went to:
- Pocke Word
- All folders
There was the text file, and I could open it and read it.
Now I must figure out what other types of documents are compatable

That is interesting, I never thought you could convert a .pdf to .txt and have it readable.

any luck with the activesync?

Does Active Sync 4.5 work with the x5? What about trying an older version of AS?

WOW!! thanks everyone :)

Thanks so much.
No luck on activesync yet, but I will keep playing with it.
I downloaded the Adobe Reader exe and I guess that I won't be able to use it without activesync running right.

Pocket Word seems to have a problem with file sizes.
I had a document that was about 2 Meg, and it chocked on that one.
So I brought it back into Word on my PC and chopped it into smaller bites.

My next try will be to convert text files to web format.
I think that has to be ctml, or something like that.

I will probably need to get a editor program to do that or figure out how the tags work and do a find-replace on them.

You all have been awesome!!
