battery life - awsome

Wow, this is awsome.

I have just bought a Mugen high capacity battery for my X5, and now get 12hrs+ of usage on memory map (my OS mapping program).

To achieve this, i have a CF gps card, set speed to 200mhz (powersave) and the LCD on 2nd lowest brightness, with dim after 15 seconds.

Previously I was getting only 3-4 hours on the standard fit battery, I think that other than lower capacity, its near the end of its life (original in 2003, perhaps?)

yeah the axim has really low power usage. it's great. the only thing i don't like is when it sits there for a week and needs to be recharged. don't know why. but it does. and replacing the backup battery is kinda a pain.

The reason the battery drains even without use is because it is always "on". This is to keep data/programs in main memory and to keep other functions (e.g., clock) going. If you know you're not going to use it for awhile, best to just keep it on your cradle or connected to some power source. If you can't do that, make sure you have regular backups.

yeah that sounds reasonable. i have actually had to reset it after the battery went completely dead. and of course you lose all your settings if that happens.

Yep, thats the downfall to this approach, and why the backup battery is there. The backup battery can usually keep things in memory for several hours at least.

Also, when it says your battery is dead, and shuts down, it actually is not. It still has perhaps 20% or so left, in order to keep things in memory for a few more days.
