Having owned an iPAQ 3835 and an Axim, the Axim's battery life is truely amazing!!
The iPAQ lasts about two days before a recharge, the Axim will last about 5. I use my Axim quite a bit througout the day, looking up phone numbers, appointments and playing games.
If this is not enough battery, the axim has an option for an extended use battery.
I agree with MartinWane. But I want to point out that mileage does vary. If you like WiFi, listening to MP3s, watching videos, reading Ebooks, or using a hard drive, then the battery will last much less time. I guess that's why they offer the extended battery.
Also, Dell may be the only manufcturer that lets you charge an extra battery in the cradle. (Batteries do not have to be plugged into the Ax to charge). This means you can charge one battery at home while using the other one at work. Way cool, if you want to spring for two batteries.

I am sure that you want actual numbers instead of just "days" or "great". I experimented with mine, and with the standard batter I get a little over five hours usage with the brightness setting one notch above off when doing alot of game playing and a little e-book reading. Also remember that the games were being played off of the CF card, which also uses up battery life. With the extended battery, same usage and brightness setting, I got a little over 15 hours.

Well, i test my Axim 400 battery life w/ movie palyback (PocketMVP). I set it on PowerSave mode(run on 200MHz, since it doesn't make many differences), Brightness level 3(good enough for watching movies or read books in any condition) and Sound level 3. My standard Axim battery can last for at least 4 hours (about 2 movies) before i need a recharge, the extended battery can last for 7-8 hours(about 4 movies! :o ). Also, all the movies are in a CF card. So I will say those batteries are more then enough for normal use(PIM or ebooks, etc).
Currently, i believe Axim has the best battery life among all the same class of 400MHz or 300MHz PDA (except for the new Casio PDA w/ 30 hours battery life, but w/o CF slot). battery is one of the most important reasons for me to buy an Axim instead of Ipaq (another reason is its price :D ). If you need the official number of battery life from Dell, here they are: Standard battery 8 hours, extended battery 25 hours. I do believe if you dont use the back light and run on PowerSave mode for PIM or reading ebooks you might be able to use an Axim w/ those number above. My conclusion is: Those batteris are good, but how you use your Axim gonna affect its battery life.
(Also, those new Palm OS 5 PDAs havent really work out their battery problem yet. Palm TT [made by Palm] has 8 hours battery life, Clie NV70 [made by Sony] only last 4 - 5 hours.)
The battery will last longer if it kept charged as much as possible. Unlike the nicad the Li Ion does not have a memory affect and does not need or want to be deep discharged.

So what's a good tolerance level to have it drop to before charging it back up?
I'd love to give a specific number but I can't. Mine never seems to get low. Ever. I listen to MP3's, play games, read books etc. all day long. It's never gone below 80% and that was after a couple of days of hard use. I have the extended battery but I never bother to put it in. I guess I'll save that for a long plane trip or something. Like maybe to Australia ;)
I have not actually seen any graphs that show where the optimum or a least where a reasonable recharge point actually is. Personally I drop it in the charger each night and it has never got below 65%. I think the point is the higher you can keep the charge the longer (more discharge/recharge cycles) it should last. If you are near the charger and it is convenient drop it in. If you are in the habit of running it to 10% each day it might be more cost effective to get a 2nd battery.

According to the NA_Li-Ion1.pdf file on this site, the 'CoBalt' chemistry Li-Ion cell will last around 300-cycles, and 500-cycles if you charge it when its above 50%. So topping it is a good idea.
Cheers.

From fully charged I get just about 3 hours, that's using the standard battery. Dell does have an option for a higher performance battery that lasts longer, but since I don't have one I can't give you any numbers.
Close to buying an Axim... one thing I can say... "What are you waiting for?!?!?" :)
