Can an X5 run on 12 Volts?
I have plenty of cig. lighter plugs that will fit the power socket and would
rather not spend $20 for something so simple if the X5 can be ran direct
from 12 volts in the car.

NO!!!

The X5 battery is 3.7 volts and the AC Adapter Power Supply Unit output is 5.4 volts.

12 volts would fry your X5
