activesync conflicts- how to disable activesync?

Is there a way to temporarily disable activesync?

My digital camera software is refusing to connect with my computer and I'm guessing that activesync is getting in the way. I would like to disable activesync so it will not load when I boot the computer in order to test my theory, but I don't want to uninstall it completely. Is there an easy way to disable it so it isn't loaded? I tried turning it off through MSCONFIG (with Win98SE) but that didn't seem to work.
