I have a 300 and a 400 Axim in front of me. I am an average user, no serious games and average apps. I can not notice any difference in performance from the 300 to the 400. I know I struggled with the decision of which one to get, I know others have also.

For what its worth. ;)

It's not the MHz for most of us. It's the RAM and the Flash.

...don't forget the ultra-cool cradle.

...oh and the ability to write "Advanced" after Axim in your posts on message boards :P

since the price difference between 300MHz and 400MHz is not that much (and 400MHz is pretty low in price). For the ram anf flash memory, 400MHz is a better choice.

I have a 300mhz Axim, and I have had no problems playing games, listening to music, or watching videos (as long as they were properly encoded). When I notice any slow down in performance it is never anything that cannot be fixed with a soft-reset.

Of course I'm in Canada so the difference in price between the basic and the advanced Axims is much larger than it is in the States, so I could not afford to get the advanced. If I were in the States I almost certainly would have bought the advanced one, even if only for the expanded built-in memory.

Regarding the speed factor, if you're really going to test the machines change them to "Normal" rather than "Auto" mode, because otherwise you'll find that both spend most of their time conserving battery power running at 200mhz and there would be no difference to see!

I was planning to get the 300 myself, but since it only cost me about $60 more to get the Advanced, I figured it'd be worth it. The Dell kiosk only had the 400, so that's the only Ax I've tried, but now that I've got it I'm EXTREMELY happy about having the extra memory. Sure, you can buy CF and SD expansions, but the RAM of your Ax is your lifeblood!

And don't forget that more software will be coming out optimized for the X-scale processor. Running those apps will surely show the difference in MHz.

But in the meantime the extra ram to install stuff, the extra rom when the next version of PPC comes out, and the cradle being included (although I never use mine) are worth the extra $100.
