I have used Nyditot with it, and most of the apps I use regularly would work at higher resolution.
Let's see, there's Text Maker, that thing I use at other aspect ratios already beacuse of its customizable toolbars etc. Pocketbible works, Drawing apps I use all work, the today screen works. Most game apps I use go fullscreen and work directly when using Nyditot anyway, so those aren't affected. Total Commander the file explorer is much nicer with the better resolution. The today page works with alternate themes. Partial-screen applications are awesome when there's a lot more real estate too, including things like GSPlayer. Finally, web browsing would be awesome.
Most of the things I use regularly would all be leaps and bounds better at VGA. What I want to see, though, is official OS support to allow instantaneous one-click rotation, and for older applications, toggleable pixel-doubling/classic mode.
Pixel doubling for input-methods would be the other thing that would be needed, if you don't use transcriber or an external keyboard.
I don't see why battery life would suffer significantly though, the biggest factor with that is the backlight, which has to do with surface area not dot-pitch.
