Replace the internal IR

I know about the IR CF cards, but I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade the internal IR of the X5? Anyone have any idea if this is possible?

Try checking out the various threads regarding people taking their axim apart (fixes for the d-pad is one). There are some really good pics of the Axim's internals there...

I guess, if you were really interested, you could take apart the ax, get a new ir diode, and soder it in. But i dont know if that would work or not??

Although I know nothing about how IR works, I suspect that it can be done. I've searched (google) and haven't found anything about it. It's an interesting idea and if you find anything out, please let us know. I have a few more months left on my warranty, so I'm not about to take mine apart and try anything.

heres some resources of opening the axim, whats inside

http://www.iit.edu/~parrlaw/axim.html
http://www.screentap.com/modules.php...artid=5&page=1

you can see it really well in this picture http://www.iit.edu/~parrlaw/axim/pic/under_lcd_2.jpg

But dont do it unless you know what you're doing.. you'll risk damage to axim and you void the warranty

Theoretically that would work because the ir is basically a led that emits infared light rather than visible light.

Anyone notice that you can see the ir blinking? I think thats why we have such a bad problem with range.. its not flying at exactly the infared frequencies. Its visible as a little blinking (white?) light.

Thats what I thought it was suppose to be.. but I my remote control program does cause it to show a visible lighted ir when you push the buttons

Dont feel like making a new post. I think I will just assume my axim has a weird ir Lol too bad I can post a picture of it since the ir is almost always visible by cameras

Maybe you can see farther than the average person into the red spectrum. Uncommon but not impossible.

As far as replacing the IR emiter, there are sites out there showing how to build an IR amplifier, maybe make one internal.

Maybe you can see farther into the red spectrum, have you looked at any other remotes when they are transmitting?

It varies from one remote to another. With some IR diodes, you can look at the tip of the remote and see the red color when you press a button. With other diodes, it does not emit any visible light. I'm honestly not sure what the pros/cons/differences are between different types of IR diodes.

But yes, on the X5 you can see the red dot if you look down at the top of the Axim when it is sending an IR command.

I know that I have seen lenses for regular flashlights to turn them into IR lights(to enhance night vision without being seen)
Like here

I have seen these work and they emit a dark red glow.

Also used for photography. Like here

The Axim may be just that. Just a regular light through an infrared filter.

I did find this site that tells you briefly what you have to do to make your IR stronger. But it involves changing the lense, not the diode.

Look around, someone has surely tried it. Maybe not with an axim, but with something.
