Secure Digital or Compact Flash
I have a Dell Axim X5. I have both the SD slot and the CF slot.

I am not sure which one is on the top and which one is on the left hand side.

Also, which one should I get since I run out of space often and have to keep deleting files? I downloaded pics from my computer that I took on my digital camera which uses a xD picture card and it can't download them all since my X5 is too full.

Which card should I get and why? Thanks.

The SD slot is smaller and on the left side. The CF slot is larger and is on the top.

CF cards are cheaper per MB, and are in principle faster. On the other hand, many folks like to use a wifi card or a GPS unit or a modem or some other accessory in the CF slot; then using the SD slot for memory makes more sense.

I have both kinds of cards, but I primarily use SD cards. By the way, if you choose to use SD cards, there are some brands that have known problems with the Axim -- search the site or start here http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...&threadid=4031 for some information about problems with Sandisk and others.

Go w/SD card. If you up grade to the new Axim X3, they only have SD slots. I would still go w/SD for memory, there is so much more you can do w/your CF slot( camera, wireless card, radio, scanners...) SD has some of the same, but more expensive than CF.

It really just depends on you. Do you plan on having your Axim for awhile? If not, go with SD. Do you want to use CF peripherals, like cameras or wifi? If so, go with SD.

For me, I hope to have my Axim for awhile, and don't have any plans to use CF peripherals, so I go with CF cards because they are cheaper than SD, and at the moment, allow for larger memory sizes.

In general it is usually more beneficial down the road to use a SD card for memory. The X3 and other PPC's have SDIO slots which enable them to be used with Wifi / Bluetooth ..etc, however the Axim X5 does not have SDIO. So if at anytime you may get an Infrared Extender, Wifi card, or some other utility card, it must be Compact Flash. In order to keep your memory with these cards, you'd have to have a SD card.

Isn't it easy though to switch between a compact flash memory card and a compact flash wifi card?

Yes, indeed it is. The only difficulty comes if you have data you want or programs you need stored on the CF card you just pulled out so you could put in your wifi card. I have a lot of data on my SD cards that I use while I'm using the wlan. So: yes, it's easy to swap out, but it may be inconvenient to do so.

I think that if your going to have your axim for a while then its more than likely that your going to get some sort of CFIO card like WiFi, Bluetooth or something and considering the SD slot doesn't support IO what else are you going to use it for.

There is a price difference to be sure but say you get a GPS system that will only work on CF and you have the maps on the CF card, you have a big prob.

In sort get a SD card. Get the largest one you can (id say 256at the smallest) cos its dead easy to will up space.

Hope this helps
