Is WM2002 Downloadable?

Hello,

I was going to try 2003, but I'd like to have 2002 waiting in case I dont like 2003 (becuase of application compatibility, mainly). Was there a place on Dell.com or their FTP or something where I can download it? i tried searching around their support but i couldn't find anything (only ROM updates).

thanks for any help :)

I believe that the WM2003 update software will allow you to backup and restore the PPC2002 OS. Read the manual, I could be wrong.... ;)

The ROM updates actually are complete copies of PPC02 but you will not be able to install them after WM03 is added (they look for the current OS and will only allow installation from an earlier version). As Howard pointed out, the upgrade provides a method for backtracking. I've read a couple of people had trouble going back, though.

The application that you run from the upgrade CD includes both the ability to create a ROM image of PPC 2002 that is on your machine, and the ability to restore that image to your Axim if you are unhappy with WM2003. I have not tried it myself, but that is what the documentation says. I did run the backup twice, just to be safe, and the files are exactly the same.

As long as you have them synced, they will be synced back to the Axim with 2003 when you install. Just be aware that the upgrade does the equivalent of a hard reset to the unit. After you run it, the first time you start te Axim it will act like a newly delivered Axim from the factory. All of the data is wiped from the Axim.

thanks for the info, doogald.

now, for the backup thing, what do i do? just run the util under Programs -> Data Backup? just out of curiousity, where exactly does this back up to? and does it do it in 1 file?

also, since you seem pretty knowledgable, will programs like Rayman, MS PocketStreets, X-Ranger, Insaniquarium, Animated Today (2002??), Macromedia Flash Player, ThemeDream, ThemeMaster, and PocketMusic work under 2003?

No, when you run the Windows Mobile 2003 upgrade it prompts you to backup the ROM Image of the Axim to your PC's hard disk. You must connect and have an ActiveSync session started when you start the install. It creates a single file with a .RIS extension.

Actually, there is a standalone ROM image backup on the WM2003 upgrade CD. Basically, IIRC, when you insert the CD it auto-opens an app with a couple of buttons. One is the WM2003 upgrade (which does prompt you to backup), and a ROM image backup app.

Also the CD comes with documentation that spells out pretty clearly what you should and should not do to get the upgrade done successfully. I'd recommend that you read it through before you start.

As I actually use none of those apps, somebody else'll have to help you out there. That said, somewhere on this site there is a WM2003 compatability thread.

yes, noticed that.

I'm getting the impression that i can't reinstall, fresh, a copy of 2002.... only restore the backup of what I had. Is this correct? or is there some place that i could get a clean copy of 2002? (not just a hard reset, becuase i want a completely fresh registry and everything else).

As I understand it, the backup is a backup of the ROM image only and not of your data or any of the applications that you install. In other words, if you reinstall the image it will set up the PPC with PPC2002 as if you have just done a hard reset.

And a hard reset actually does install a completely fresh registry and everything else. It is a soft reset that does not wipe any data. A hard reset makes the device look and act as if you have just received it fresh from the factory.
