PXA250 vs PXA255 Benchmarks

Just found out that a fellow co-worker just purchased an X5 with the PXA255 processor. We decided to run the Spb benchmarks to see how much faster his Axim was compared to mine with the PXA250.

Test Conditions:

PXA250
OS: WM2003
Processor set to "Normal" - 400Mhz/100Mhz

PXA255
OS: WM2003
Processor set to "Maxium Performance" - 400Mhz/200Mhz

To be fair, we both backed up our data and performed a hard reset. The units were not in the cradle when the tests were ran.

Results:

Code:

It appears that the increased bus speed of the PXA255 is pretty significant. Pocket Word document was a lot slower on the 255 than the 250. We ran this twice and still got the same result...puzzling. Anyways, I loaded Morphgear and the PXA255 played FF2 almost perfectly with sound on. Very little slow down.
Anyone seen the results for the Asus 620? The graphics numbers are ridiculous!

Interesting to see a comparison like this. I would wonder what the impact on battery life is though. I'm imagining that if the added performance comes at the cost of a significant amount of battery life, then it will be made irrelevant for most users using the device away from an outlet.

I'm a bit of a newbie, but i'd expect impact on battery life to be tiny, as the 255 is not 'faster', but 'more efficient' at processing data.

I don't actually know, so if I'm wrong, don't hesitate to correct me!

wierd that the 250 gets better in only the PW Open, wonder why it gets more speed in PW?

The impact could be significant. By doubling the bus speed you are doubling the number of times it has to switch from 1 to 0, etc. Each switch takes power. It won't double the total power consumption (there are lots of other things drawing power) but it will be more than tiny. The 255 is NOT more efficient, but it can run faster on the internal buss.

But was the Axim with the PXA255 running on Max Perform?? If not, then isnt the Bus speed exactly the same (99mhz) as on the PXA250?? Atleast that is what I have come to believe after reading through other posts. Once it is bumped up to Max Perform, then it runs at 199mhz. This is only available on the Axim Adv. Just so you know. I have the Basic so I have never been able to try this myself.

Yep, he said right at the top of the post that it was Maximum Performance :)
