How do you change the backup battery without losing data? Do I just keep it pluged into AC? tia

Keep the main battery in and change the backup.

does the backup battery charge? It seems that sometimes it was at like 80 and then charged to 100. Now it just stays at 50%. Where do you get a new backup battery for it?

The backup does not charge...it just runs down. I bought mine at Target for $2.95 just a couple of weeks ago. The original lasted me almost one full year, and that seemed like a bargain.

If you start getting the warning pop-up that you're running low, it would be a good investment. ;)

BTW, just to keep everything in one thread (in case someone is searching) this is the battery: CR2032

I think the indication of the back up battery is just a little flakey.
I e-mailed Dell, we went back and forth before they actually understood me.
Finally they said I should just call in. ... I never did.

I did deduce this, not 100% sure about it though:

To really check the level in your backup battery, fully charge your main battery, and then perform a soft reset.
When I do this I can go from a 20% reading on my backup battery to 100%.
I'm not TOO sure that really means what I'd hope it does, but I'm inclined to think it means it is still a little good.
I got my Axim this past March, so I'm holding out until this coming to replace the backup battery.
Annually sounds good to me too.

The ax dosent read the back up very well + batteries will acted discharged or more charged depending on conditions(same with all batteries) too switch a backup battery, plug in the ac cord and keep the main battery in and make sure it is charged. It is just a standard button battery you can pick up at the store (refer to the user manual or battery to see the exact size/ model number)
