Turning the volume up and down, flipping pages in an ebook, and adjusting brightness are my main uses. The scroll tab does the same things as the D-pad up/down.
You have to map the scroll to volume in media player for that to work, and when you push the scroll in, the D-pad controls brightness.
It's often easier to use the scroll to move up and down in a big list or doc, especially something like acrobat.
