Yes. After a restore, it asks if you want to sync the sync folder, and in which direction.
If you don't restore, but simply sync a wiped out unit, it may think you just deleted everything and proceed according to its rules. If you know it's coming, you can change the rules before doing it.

The point is -

the thing won't let you delete anything without making you confirm. When I hard reset, and then I put it on the cradle - I tried to use the same name I used before. It wouldn't accept it - on the PC it would say "name in use" so I created a new name. Once I did that - it deleted everything on my computer. Simple as that.

Have you done a hard reset on yours after entering in data?

Maybe in the PPC world it makes sense to delete everything on your computer after a hard reset, but thats not how palm works. Active synce kills hot sync, but I've never had this kind of issue with hot sync.

It just sucked. I've worked with computers as a Sr. Systems Engineer for a few years. I don't believe I made a mistake and I'm certain I didn't pass up a menu that said "delete everything on your computer? [yes] [no]"

The difference between an emptied Axim and a hard reset is the same difference of a Win98 computer that has had all the programs removed and one that has been formatted and reinstalled. If I deleted all the contacts and appointments from my axim and then sync'd I would expect them to be deleted from the computer. But a hard reset one should transfer the data from the PC to the Axim or - at the very least - ask after doing the hard reset how it wants to handle the data.

I feel your pain...
Like you I have been in IT has a System Engineer for over 25 years started working with IBM mainframes and now with Unix and I have had a hard time adjusting to the wonderful world of Windows with all it's problems. You would think there would be some sort of safe guards or at least a prompt to warn you of wiping out your data but then again it's like play toy. Since this is the way it works maybe we can figure out a work around or at least a procedure to avoid going through this again ??

This might sound obvious, but did you look in your "Deleted Items" folder? This happened to me once, but I found everything sitting in my "Deleted Items" folder, so I just restored it.

This doesn't prevent it from happening, but at least you can get the information back easily when it does.

Thanks for the suggestion ben. I ended up restoring my information from tape. I use an exchange server and had to restore it from it from the previous nights backup.

I know you've already gotten your data back, this is for future readers who have this issue.

I got an unintended hard reset due to bent pins on the bottom connector of my X3i (another post, another day). I restored the most recent backup (approx 6 weeks old) from my SD card, then synced with my desktop (at work), assuming it would bring the Ax up to date. Well, all appointments, tasks, notes that were previously on my desktop were gone. That's when I started checkin forums, and found this thread.

My first plan was going to be to copy my folders from my home desktop's Outlook (I sync both desktops with Ax), since they were only a day or two old.

Before I did this, someone at work said, "What does it do with the items it replaces... put them in the Deleted Items folder or what?" Well, that's exactly what it does. I just went into the deleted items, and copied back in what I had lost. This resulted in some duplicates in Calendar, but no big deal there.

Anyway, back in business.

Not as obvious as you might think ;) I had my Axim accidently hard reset when I soft reset it, and had a similiar problem (all m emails that were in subfolders ON MY PC disappeared even though I clearly indicated to have everything on my PC feed into my "new PPC" (I think it had something to do with having all my mail sub-folders duplicated on my PPC, but only a few of them had the boxes checked to be "synced...those were the ones that were wiped clean on my pc). However, further looking revealed that they were placed in my pc's deleted folder, alonmg with about 20 newly added contacts). Lessons:

1. Always have a full backup on ActiveStync
2. Always have a full backup on your card
3. Only sync those email folders you really want to sync.
