Has anyone had the transcriber just plain stop working. Ill try and do a backspace and it will write an "I" and no matter what else i try to write its not what its supposed to be! (my penmanship isnt THAT bad hehe) You think a hard reset would work? I did install a writeright screen protector but the transcriber worked with that for a whole month before it went wacko.
Thanks

This reply may only succeed in highlighting my own mess-ups, but when I received my Axim and started using the transcriber, I managed at various times to change the orientation angle (indicated by the arrow icon) and the expected character type (indicated by the "a", "A", or "12" next to the arrow.

Wait a second! :o You may be right (I sure hope so) I do remember playing with those settings, which way is the arrow supposed to point?
Thanks so much for the response :D

Arrow is perpendicular to writing direction (so its UP by default)

I've not seen too much traffic about transcriber so far. I am a prospective axim user and am particularly interested in what transcriber is like. I have had a previous PDA but gave up using it because using the script was hopeless. I have tried transcriber on a Toshiba and an IPac side by side with quite different degrees of success. The Toshiba appeared to be very accurate even with my scrawl. But the iPac was as bad as my old PDA.
What is transcrber like on the axim? and does anyone have any idea if the 300 or 400 models are any different in this respect. ie does the processer speed effect accuracy?
This is one of my deciding features for whether I take the plunge and get an Axim. I don't like the popup keyboards and I don't want to carry a folding keyboard arround with me. When I saw transcriber on the Toshiba I thought this was the answer but then seeing the perfomance on the iPac I lost confidence again. Any help would be great :D

I have nothing to compare the transcriber on the Axim to, but I'll give you my views anyway. (Aren't you lucky? )
You can change the speed by which the transcriber 'recognizes' your handwriting. I find slower gives me time to cross t's and dot i's where the faster speed doesn't. You can go into the handwriting function and "teach" it some letters if you write them a bit different than most.
If you're taking major notes, you may want to stay in the "note" function and then recognize the words at a later time, thereby not needing to wait until the transcriber catches up with you.
I've found that the transcriber reads most of my handwriting and quite a bit of my husband's scrawl, which is kind of unreadable on his best days... your mileage may vary but I found it to be a pretty decent recognition system for what I use it for.

I really like it, although it would be nice to have a bigger screen to fit more of my humongo letters in.
I think it does a very good job, provided you have the orientation set right :D . I just started practicing writing with my nondominant hand and wow, it still recognizes my 1st grade writing.
Try it.
Buy it.
Enjoy it.

Writing straight across the screen, as neatly as possible, transcriber does a pretty good job. A more pencil or pen-sized stylus should help a lot too, as the grip on the little stylus is a bit unnatural.
The non-recognized handwriting notes are the fastest way of entering text when you're in a hurry or trying to write down directions or a phone number ... especially if you put a shortcut to notes on your desktop.

Thanks for all the help. You have restored my confidence in transcriber. All that I need to do now is generate enough cash so I can buy one. I have wanted one since last Christmas and have had to wait until now for then to be available here in the UK. :( Oh well they say that patience is a virtue :D which is just as well since by the sound of other posts I may have to wait for a while once I've placed my order.
Thanks again

I have a HORRID time successfully writing the letter G. I've tried and tried, and it just won't work. I always get D or C or 6.

The transcriber rocks actually compared to others I have tried. The thing about it is that its like learning your alphabet all over again, its a mix of cursive and crosses and such. Its pretty neat, I havent mastered it yet but I find myself changing between modes alot in order to accomplish different things. I love my axim :)

I just wanted to add for those that use transcriber , that I seriously recommend you trying out Calligrapher, it's one of the best programs I have on my axim. it's an improved version of transcriber. basically for each letter, it shows you a list of writing it, and you choose either, often, rarely or never on how you write on that certain way. such as I tell it that I never handwrite a capital a, and only print it so in the future it'll always consider that as a small a and not mistaken for capital, etc.

hibiki,
transcriber does this as well, you can teach is which forms of the letters you use personally, with the exaxt 'often, rarely, or never' settings.
I too have the x problem mentioned above. Anyone have any suggestions on getting x easily.
