Changing start menu background

I created a new "Today" page using Microsoft Theme Generator but now my "Start Menu" background is clear instead of white and I can't see the black text. Is there a way to change the start menu text color or change the menu background back to white?

Yes. Download the cool, free utility, WisBar (grab the "Final" version). It'll let you modify text colors, background images, tweak many other settings, even task switch... recommended.

I downloaded it but I still can't seem to change the drop down menu text colors; they're still black with a clear background. Will Wisbar allow you to change the background on the drop down menu?

Theme Generator from MS will load any image for the start menu, and allow you to adjust the fog or brightness until the black (default) text color is visible. Can't change text color on this menu, but you can on the Today screen.
The image for the start menu can be the same as your wallpaper, or something different.

Man do I feel stupid... but I can't figure out how to change the background to be something different than the wallpaper image. Where on the start page do I change this? :(

When you start Theme Generator on your PC, it starts with the selection screen, so choose "Create a new Theme". The next page is where you select your main wallpaper. Browse to a graphic file and click "Modify this image". Play with the light/dark slider and transparency until you have what you want. Click OK and then Next.
This page allows you to select your Start menu image. either use the same image as the wallpaper, or choose "Use a different image" and browse to it. If you select a different image, the Modify box is enabled, allowing you to adjust the light/dark/ transparency again for the new image, as well as line it up for best effect. Click OK, and then click on the Start button of the preview display to toggle the start menu to see it work. Click Next.
Select each item in the drop-down list and set your choices for text, Nav bar color, cmd bar color etc.
Click Next and name the theme. Check the box to send to the PDA when finished. Dock your axim if not already in and wait until sync is finished working.
Click Finish in the Theme Generator and it will be done.
Go nuts.

You'll soon find out that you need to create images with your graphics progs beforehand to use with this, but that's the fun. Make a note of the image sizes required (241 x 287, etc)
