Hi there,
I got my Axim yesterday 2/10, four days before the estimated ship date. Plugged in the Linksys WCF12 and was up and surfing in no time. Now, I figured out how to go into file explorer and browse network folders, but i am having trouble playing mp3s and viewing images from my desktop on Axim. I can see them, and I can copy them over to the Axim, but I can't open them unless they are physically copied onto the handheld. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?
Also, how do I turn on the three letter extentions in file explorer? I want to copy a DLL file (gx.dll) from my desktop to my Axim via wireless network, but it doesn't show up when I browse to the appropriate folder on my desktop.
I'm really looking forward to exploring the full potential of this machine. Already, it's done much more than my T615c ever did, and it was cheaper too.

I don't know about playing media from your desktop... I just don't see the point of that. As for the extensions, it's a setting in Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options, then unclick the "Hide extensions for known file types", the click on OK. Why are you copying that particular file? I'm not sure it will work on the PPC, but I could be wrong.

To avoid tying up precious PPC real estate! I'll have to give that a try when I get home ...

i've done it many sometimes. sometimes though, for some reason, it only plays part of the song. i use the regular file explorer, find the media file on my network, click on it and your media player should pick it up and start playing it.

I have been able to stream mp3s off my desktop onto my Axim when I'm in bed in the next room. Here's how:
1. Use PocketMVP to play files from your network. Unlike Windows Media Player it allows you to cache so your file won't get interrupted by slow downs in the data stream (just make sure to go to PocketMVP's Settings and enable the cache). Open the file by entering it's name and location on the network via the URL (e.g., tap "open", tap "URL", type in "\\the name of your computer\directory of shared network folder\name of file.mp3) EXAMPLE: \\Rumsfeld\Music\ACDC-Back in Black.mp3
2. In order to view mp3 files on your network you'll need to use a file explorer app. Unfortunately, tThe version of File Explorer that's part of PocketPC 2002 will let you see files on your network drive but for some inane reason doesn't allow you to open them directly. Try using Rescoe's file explorer which allows you to map your network and then open mp3 files on your Axim without having to type in that long URL in PocketMVP. Just remember to associate mp3 files with PocketMVP in lieu of Window Media Player.
Happy streaming!
P.S. You need to have a Wifi connection in order to do this. This may not be obvious if you're new to the Axim or to networking.

Racer X,
Thanks for your post. Resco File Explorer + PocketMVP work great for streaming MP3s off of my desktop.

Racer X, where can I download PocketMVP? I've got a network mapping utility, and I have been trying various players to find one that caches the whole song. I found one that caches half of the song, but I still get that break in the middle. Seems like I need PocketMVP.

PocketMVP.
I streamed an individual MP3 via WMP, but can a playlist be streamed?

Webdes03,
Our very own Aximsite also has the file available for download: PocketMVP
Deputy,
Since I don't bother to stream with WMP I dont know whether a playlist can be streamed. I'd like to do this with PocketMVP as it would make this whole thing a lot more convenient. Anyone figure out a way?

I'm going to post the same answer i gave on another post:
"Do you have access to your network shares from your axim?
If you do it's pretty easy. Just share the directory you want (music dir?), on your desktop to have EVERYBODY with read access privileges
Then, you need to map a network drive into your axim so you'll see it as an additional directory on your file explorer (if you surf directly to the network share using that program, you won't be able to open the files (why?, I don't know but it's pretty stupid if you ask me <_< )
To do that i used a freeware program called NETRUNNER 2.0. You can find it HERE
After you map the drive into a directory on your PDA, you will be able to surf into it and picking files from it as if it were on the pda (just like another directory)
Now, the catch is that the windows media player is pretty bad playing mp3s from a network connection (why?? toooo many questions already, he he ). I guess it's too taxing on the CPU or it doesn't provide some buffer for replay. Whatever
I use the best program IMO to play mp3, pocketmusic. You can find it HERE. Not a single problem with it.
I use my axim downstairs while studying and i can stream my mp3s directly from my PC
IF you don't know how to setup your shares on the PC, you can find a lot of different post on how to do it.
Good luck"
Again, good luck :)

If you experience problems when you click on a network file and it does nothing, try my solution. What I do is I select the file I want to access, open the drop-down menu by holding the stylus on it, and click copy. Now, go find a temporary place to stick stuff on your Ax, and instead of pasting the file, just paste a shortcut. Now, if you click on the shortcut, it'll take care of that nasty can't-open-files syndrome.

Using the Resco file explorer allows you to alter your browser settings:

Does anyone know if there is a way to create PocketMVP playlists on your desktop?
Because I've got my mp3s sorted into individual folders for the bands and PocketMVP won't let me recurse the subdirectories and add all 1200 at once :(
