Mad Problem with X5 ROM Upgrade

I'm involved in an email exchange with Dell tech support that is very frustrating. Here's my problem; maybe someone can help me out. (Axim X5).

I synch with GroupWise calendaring / email / etc. at work. Synching with the Axim has been problematic at best. A friend told me that he resolved some problems synching with Outlook by downloading a USB patch from Dell. I took a look, then called Dell, but was told that was exactly the same software as is on the original CD.

I did, however, download the ROM upgrade, since I thought that may resolve some of the issues. During installation, it warned me to back up, so I did.

Then I applied the ROM upgrade, and tried to restore from the backup. No can do. Dell says that it won't work. Can't rename the file, change the folder, fool the system - nothing. My SD card also got wiped out during the upgrade.

I asked Dell why they would even have the upgrade available on the web if 100% of users upgrading their ROM would not be able to restore their files. No good answer. I called Dell 6 times on this issue. No luck.

Anyone know if there is any use to me at all for the perfectly good backup file on my laptop?

Thanks.
