Question Program preference: Main or Built-in Memory.

I'm about to buy a memory card (SD or MMC) and wondered how you know which programs can be installed on it?

Most of the time I'll have personal data/files/music on the card, but I was told you can choose to install programs too?

Right now I have about 5MB of "built-in memory" left on my Axim X5. When I choose to install drivers/programs I get the choice: Default Main Memory - or Built-In memory. Most of my programs (95%) dont work or run at all in the built in stuff.

Does this mean if I get a memory card they wont work either? How do you know if a program has a preference for one or the other? I'd like to keep as much of my Axims Rom/Ram free for running stuff...not storying stuff.

Thanks.

Question I have yet...

to find a program that will not run from "Built in memory" or CF & SD cards!

I have Many programs loaded, The one I did install into main memory is MS Media player 9. said it would run BETTER there.

What programs will not run from "built in memory"?

I believe that some Today screen plugins require installation into main memory. Also, there is at least one program I can think of that requires main memory: Mastersoft Money. I had initially installed it on my SD card but it didn't work. I emailed support and they told me it had to be installed into main memory.

For more info re: installing programs, see this tutorial.

Stuff that wont go in in other memory

In reponse to the original message, examples of things I"m trying to load into "built-in Memory" are:
Axim Foldable Keyboard Driver,
Veo CF Camera driver,
Dell 802.11 Wireless CF driver
MS pocketMoney 2004
Pocket PMV player
THey all install fine, but when I try to use them... sometimes I get an error message (like MSMoney) or they dont load properly.
Another application I tried to load was DotPocket trial... it didnt work at all in Built-in Memory... but like each of the above... as soon as it was removed/reinstalled in MAIN memory...it worked without a hitch.
So now I"m worried that if I get a SD card, I'll only be able to store data on it... and not install programs etc. I have an Axim 5x with 32MB of memory, and would like to keep it as free as possible etc.

Personally, I've had no problems installing / running programs from my SD card. I've got 90% of my programs installed on it, the few that aren't were very small, so there was really no point. I think most any program SHOULD work on your SD card, the few that for some reason will not work...probably wouldn't take up enough memory to worry about it.

FYI, I have a Netgear WiFi card w/ drivers installed on the SD card, and haven't had any problems whatsoever.

Built-In memory is very, very slow. Some of the problems may be timing related. Drivers usually need to be in Main memory because that is where the O/S looks for them.

The option to install to a memory card doesn't show up until you have a memory card in place, I believe.

I have all of my programs except Pocket Facelift, Pocket Backup Plus, and my emulators installed to memory cards.

Another program which should be installed in Main Memory is Agenda Fusion - if it is not, the buttons will not operate properly/at all. Pocket Informant may well be the same.

Screen plug ins too are best in Main Memory, such as Launcher, Calendar Plus, Task Plus and Icbar, Wisbar or Gigabar. All of these are available as free downloads from Aximsite>Other Resources>Downloads (except Gigabar which is freeware from www.gigabar.com/downloads). Fortunately they are all pretty small.

My Pocket Backup Plus works perfecty from my SD Card.

Built In Storage is best used for PIM info backup and possibly "My Documents". It is ROM and hence not volatile like Main Memory which is RAM and will lose its contents after a battery failure/verylow charge or after a hard reset. If you use Pocket Backup Plus you could probably store a full backup in Built In Memory if you compress it - otherwise there will not be enough room. Built in Memory is not the best place to install any programs.

I strongly recommeng Gigi's excellent tutorial - see her post above.

IcBar, tdLaunch, and Owner Info X need to be installed into Main Memory as well, but other than that the rest of my programs are in my SD card.

The recently released Dell drivers update I installed into Main Memory. Pocket Money 2004 is installed in my SD card as well. Hope this helps! :)
