Holy crap .. how long does it take to copy files from your SD to your harddrive?

I just recieved a Viking 256 MB SD card in the mail and used it to copy an 18 minute film clip on it from my digital camera. I put the SD card in my axim and was planning on transfering the clip to my harddrive and it is taking eons!! Would I do better by getting one of those usb keychain readers that you put your SD card in or buy a SD card reader? This just way too slow.

I would say you should definately get a Lexar Jumpdrive or some other similar device for reading your SD card. It is super slow trying to use Activesync for transfering files. What would take me 1/2 hour to copy with Activesync takes me 2 minuets with the reader.

I did a test a while back on two different brands of sd cards copying ~100MB of music files. I've attached a chart with the results. Note, the PC I was using only has a 1.1 USB so the readers could be even faster with a 2.0. Also, I think the ActiveSync is even slower if you have a single large file.

Good move. Get either a card reader or a jumpdrive trio (I have both); they're cheap and plenty worth it.

I used to use Active Sync to transfer files and it took forever. I finally broke down and bought a card reader for my CF card. It works much better. :)

I use the new version of the JumpDrive Trio that is USB 2.0 compliant. It is super fast! I got mine at ecost.com for less than $15. Or you can also get a SimpleTech Bonzai. They have a forum for it here.

Grrr.... problem. I just bought 2 jumpdrive trios, one for me and one for a gift and found out that it can't reach my front usb port. The darn thing is too close to the side wall. And the person I am buying the other one for has the exact same computer. Dang Gateway.... they should have forseen this. There would be no usb drives that would work without a cable. I may climb inside and see what I can move around.

Edit: Nevermind .. I feel like a dork right now. There was a cable to fix this. Still bothered by Gateway's shortsightedness in not making it easy to attach a USB jump drive. I think I'll attach the cable to the back ones and leave my fronts ones for other things. (Besides jumpdrives)
