Does Dell offer a car charger for the Axim?

I ordered my X5 400MHz last night from Dell and I was looking through the accessories and I did not see a car charger for the unit. Does Dell make one and if so does anyone know the price or the part number so I can call and order it? If they do not make one does an aftermarket company make one?

A better item to buy is a DC-AC inverter (12vdc in, 120vac out) which plugs into your cigarette lighter and has 2 outlets to plug in your equipment such as the bricks from a laptop and the Axim. A 150w one will be enough to handle the load. They can be bought for $20 on sale.

Jacklew, I have seen these before but never knew enought about them to buy one. What can you tell me I should look for in one. You said they canbe found for $20 or so on sale. Can you or anyone give me a link to one you would suggest for around this price?

Thanks!

saw some on sale at Circuit City today for about $20-$40 after mail in rebate. Depending on the power you need.

Don't know if you guys have a Sam's Club near you but I picked up a 400 watt, two outlet Power converter for my laptop for $28.00 and some change. It works great and provides plenty of power. I wouldn't recommend anything less than 400 watts because these electronics pull a lot of power. Especially if you want to run a laptop in the car.

The recommendations from all of the manufacturers for equipment drawing 300w or more is to wire the inverter directly to the battery posts and not plugging in through the cigarette lighter socket. This is to avoid running high currents through the wires and overheating. I have had no problems running a laptop from a 140w inverter. I remember Costco use to have something for about $30.

Forgive my ignorant question but how long can these power converters give power to an Axim or laptop? The description says, "provides a 150-watt output for 30 minutes with a 300-watt surge." Is this when the engine is off, kinda like a UPS? If the engine is on, and the car's electrical system is in good condition, can the Power Converter provide power to the Axim indefinitely?

It's good old marketing by Xantrex - the continuous power is 20% than the 30 minute rated power, so the 300 runs at 240w continuously. The inverter will slowly drain the battery, so if you use a power hungry device for a long time, you may not be able to start your car. If it's in use when the car is running, then the battery is being charged by the alternator and your device can be on indefinitely.
