I ordered my original Axim on 1/23/03 and received it on 2/6/03. It was Rev A04. I experienced the well documented d-pad problem with this unit.

According the the box that it shipped in, this unit was manufactured on 1/23/03. After a call to Dell Tech Support they overnighted me a new Axim which I received on 2/11/03. This new unit's manufactured date is 2/5/03.

This new unit it is still version A04. I can still "feel" a difference in the d-pad when pressing the right side compared to the other directions, but the performance of the d-pad is much better than my original Axim.

Don't know if this is true of all shipments, or if the manufactured date is truly the date it was built, but if you look just above the UPC code on the smaller internal box that the Axim ships in there is a Manufactured Date as well as the Rev. of the unit. It will look something like: MFG DATE M030205 REV. A04 (i.e. 2/5/03 Rev. A04)

Am interested in finding out when Rev A05 first began being manufactured.

I have an A05 (it's a 300) and the box says that it was made on 1/24/03.

I haven't even touched the D-Pad at this point so I have no idea what the performance of it is like.

I have an Axim X5 300MHz Revision A05. I ordered on Jan. 14, 2003, it shipped on Feb. 10, and I received it on Feb. 12. It says M030127 so that sounds like it means that it was manufactured on Jan. 27, 2003. It must take a long time for Dell to receive the handhelds from Wistron in Taiwan and package them. The D-pad seems fine on mine, especially since I have been using YAMECE for NES emulation (but not a lot.) What was the problem with the D-pad? I don't see anything wrong with mine.

Sorry I didn't include it in the previous post, my Axim is a 400 MHz.

The problem many people experience with the d-pad usually involves movement to the right. As a test, you can open Pocket Excel and use the d-pad to move from cell to cell. See if you get the same performance in all directions using the same amount of pressure on the d-pad. Some of us had to really "hammer" the d-pad to get it to move to the right.

From what I've read on the newsgroups, don't read too much into the revision version. Its not like a BIOS version, more of a manufacturing thing. I'll see if I can find the link were I read that...
