Nothing seems to be working. I thought that perhaps there was a diff between the ASYNC3.5 from the web and version on the Dell CD, so I just got back to work and tried that version. Same thing. I printed out the install log file, unistalled ASYNC, and then manually verified the status of each file in the log that was copied or refreshed. I made certain that the refreshed files were first deleted before I reinstalled so that the associated version would be there. No help. Same problem. When I first set-up my partnership, the AXIM syncs OK. If I disconnect and reconnect, it goes to guest. I can delete the partnership and set-up a new partnership, but that is a pain.

OK. So then I decided to take it a step further. I installed ASYNC again, printed out the file list from the setup folder on the CD, checked EACH file that was listed on the CD and found that there were none (except for a few *conv.dll files). I used Norton Systemworks 2001 WinDoctor from the CD-ROM to check the registry and clean out any obsolete references, etc. I then manually checked the registry for references to ASYNC and found one entry that refered the WCESMGR, so I deleted that. I rebooted and reinstalled 3.5. Same problem.

I'll be talking with Dell.

Look for any remnants of the program that you deleted that began your fall from sync grace. There is something remaining from that program that your Axim relates to when you reconnect to the cradle forcing you to go through those terrible steps to regain a partnership only to have it screwed up each time you remove the Axim from the cradle. Just a suggestion but I would almost bet there is a pointer to some remants of that software you deleted.

I'm sure many are curious as to the fix for this problem. But it seems a benign and hidden problem. I wouldn't think it to be an Axim or a PC problem per se. Best of luck.

Just a curious question ... does the AS window show that you're disconnected when you remove the Axim? I get a ding when I connect, and another when I disconnect (on the PC end), and a "going up" and a "going down" bell on the Axim end.
SWAG that the PC doesn't know you ended the first session.

When I disconnect from AS, I get the ding, but the AS window still shows the Axim info, although it DOES say disconnected. When I reconnect, it goes to guest.

As for finding a remnant of the program that started this crap, where do I even begin to find that information?

Follow up: I was able to talk my IT dept into installing win2k on my laptop. They won't support xp. I've had no problems since. Apparently, whatever the problem is resides in win98.
