When I first got my Axim, I installed ActiveSync 3.5 and everything worked fine. Then I installed 3.6 and uninstalled it after reading the posts. I reinstalled 3.5 from the CD and all was good again. Recently, I tried to get the on-line Intellisync for MSN" working, but didn't realize until AFTER installation, that you had to be an MSN member, not just a .NET (Hotmail) member. I uninstalled it, then ASYNC started working weird. When I hook up my Axim, the GUEST partnership appears!. If I turn off my Axim, delete the partnership, and turn it back on, it syncs up right. But if I turn off the AXIM and then turn it back on again, it reverts to GUEST. I uninstalled 3.5 again, deleted any references in the registry and in my program files folders, downloaded a copy from the MS web site (I don't have my CD here). Same deal. Any ideas?

I'm a little confused. You said, "If I turn off my Axim, delete the partnership, and turn it back on, it syncs up right. But if I turn off the AXIM and then turn it back on again, it reverts to GUEST." After you delete the partnership it should force you to establish a new partnership because none exists. Is it doing that? If not, then it isn't really establishing a partnership properly. That would then explain the phenomenon of reverting to Guest.
I would suggest at this point that you rename the Axim (Settings>System>About>Device ID), delete all partnernships on the desktop, and then reconnect to the desktop. It will then establish a partnership with this "new" machine and resync all the objects you have chosen. Doing this may (probably will) result in dupes, so you might want to review the Settings in the Options window of Activesync on the Desktop.

I'll explain a bit more clearly, I hope. When there is no partnership and I connect my PC with my AXIM, the wizard starts and sets up a partnership properly. It synchronizes just fine. If I disconnect or turn off my AXIM and turn it back on, it connects as a GUEST. I have already tried the renaming bit on the AXIM, I've tried a rename and reset, and I've even completely cleared the system by removing all the batteries. I hope this helps you understand my problem. Thanks for the reply.

Ok, I see it now. I don't have a magic bullet for you. something on either the desktop or Axim is not getting set up properly. I would suspect one of the removed sync programs left something behind that is interfering with the reinstalled Activesync. IF, and that is a big IF, you have backups of just before you started trying the other sync'ers, you could try a restore on the Desktop. You've already hard reset the Axim, so it shouldn't be there.
What is the operating system on the Desktop? Any chance the other sync apps changed the USB driver?

I'm having exactly the same problem. If I uninstall, then re-install active sync, I'll connect once with a partnership. If I remove the dell from the cradle, it automatically re-connects as a guest. The only way I can get it to connect with a partnership is to uninstall/re-install. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I would upgrade to ActiveSync 3.6 while you are at it. It made some reliabilty improvements over 3.5. What OS are you running?

I think the problem may lay with ActiveSync thinking that there is 2 UN-unique names of the Axim on your system, hence it doesn't know which one to sync to.

On a side bar, what should be in the Microsoft ActiveSync folder on the PC? Should there be folders or just files?

re: my earlier post: I've got as 3.6 running, and I cleared out all the partnerships. It still does the same thing. If I install as 3.6, then set up a new partnership, I'll sync once and stay connected as long as I keep the machine in the cradle. Once I remove it, when I put it back in, it asks no questions, it just connects as "guest". I'm baffled. Running win98, btw.

Maybe I just don't understand this ActiveSync thing, but where exactly do you go to remove or clear out partnerships? I ask this be cause I don't see anything in the ActiveSync folder on the PC.

Update: I went ahead and hard reset the axim & uninstalled active sync from my laptop to start fresh. Re-installed everything, hooked up & sync'ed. Then I pulled the axim out of the cradle, & put it back in. Hooked back up as guest. Using Active sync 3.6, usb cradle, windows 98se on a toshiba laptop. I'm all out of things to do.

Everything in MyDoc on the X5 shows up in my desktop PC folder that was generated by AS; files and folders.

OK, this is my guess. For some unknown reason your computer is reading your axim as a different device each time, hence it requiring you to do a guest log on. If you feel like it try this:
- Delete all ActiveSync from your computer
- Hard Reset your Axim
- Rename your Axim
- Install ActiveSync from the Dell Companion CD
- When prompted, slide your Axim in the cradle
If this does not work you have a couple options, restore your computer and hard reset your axim and start from a clean plate. Or get a hold of Dell. The common object here is your axim. But one thing i did notice atleast with XP is that if i dont install activesync, and i just hook up my axim, my computer recognizes it. not sure if this is good or bad, but maybe that will spark something in someone elses brain

Hey, you're right. There it is in MyComp ... just like a little card reader.

Remove the Axim from the cradle or cable. Open Activesync on the pc. Under File you will see Delete Partnership. If you have only one, and click it, it's gone. If you have more than one, it will ask which to delete.
With the Axim connected, it's greyed out.
