Exclamation UK Axim just arrived - 1st impressions

Hi all,

My Axim Advanced was delivered yesterday morning (by UPS)!! (BTW I live just north of London, UK.)

It was a pleasant suprise to say the least as I ordered it on the Dell web site only 6 days before (late last Saturday nite); the expected delivery date was somthing like 21 Feb, and I'd heard than many fellow UK buyers had experienced further delays. So first comment, well done Dell for exceeding expectations on delivery!

After charging it for a few hours and then playing with it for about 3-4 hours last night, I must admit on having mixed emotions on my new purchase.

On the software side, the installed appls. are OK, though a bit thin on the ground and most on the supplied Dell CD are only demo versions. However, I'll be the 1st to admit, I'd rather have a lower total price than pay for bundled appls. I won't use. I have also already started downloading several appls. that I think I'll be using.

I must admit I am really disappointed with the overall build quality. To be fair to Dell, I haven't looked closely at any other PPCs to get an accurate view of competitive products and the screen is great (no complaints there). But the rocker switch and the D-pad at the bottom are a joke. Really tacky and low quality and almost impossible to use. (It feels really 'loose' and there's no real tactile feedback or a 'click' or anything really, when a direction is pressed.)

I haven't yet installed the Dell patch so I'll reserve judgment, but I'm a sucka for hardware quality and don't often sacrifice price for quality

So in summary, it's too early to give it an overall thumbs up or a thumbs down.....

the dell patch will only give you the capability to use the center button on the d-pad.

i have the same d-pad you do but my fiance has a newer d-pad that is stiffer.

i don't like her d-pad at all. when i play games using her axim its very hard to move the character around.

at first i was disappointed i got the older version but now i'm glad.

i think you'll like it more eventually :)

would you mind taking a picture of the "flip lid" i'm really interested to see what it looks like
