For one of my networks I just finished creating the whole Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth series, I also have them all in paperback and some in hardback, but I wanted them on my PPC as well, they are great books.

I also have abotu 16 Tom Clancy ones that were a little hard to come by and of course the LOTR series and a few other series as well.

Ebooks are pretty cool, I have *almost* all the ebooks I own in print form as well, but if I don't finish at least one off in a series why would I want to buy the rest ? ;)

I've bought quite a few at Amazon.com. And as many have pointed out there are a ton of good legit free ones out there as well.

My preference is actually to use PALM format files and readers - Basic stuff but more text on the screen and simple touch to go up & down the file.

Peanut Press offers the Palm reader for free (deluxe one for a few $ as well). The file extension is .pdb . They also offer free encoder and a small fee deluxe encoder.

Another free reader for many file formats is Microbook from www.gowerpoint.com. A very solid product.

The adobe e-book reader is free from www.adobe.com

As Raynne has mentioned there is a plugin for Microsoft word that allows you to convert files into .lit. When I get an E-book thats a PDF file i just copy all the text (a simple "Select all" will do) and then paste it into a Word doc. Then I just convert and voila, I have an e-book for MS Reader. I personally hate acrobat reader and try to avoid it as much as possible.

Furthermore if you're using Kazaa I keep stumbling across a zip file of about 80 e-books already in .lit format. Mostly Dean Koontz and Stephen King books plus a lot of classics. Its pretty easy to find, just keep looking ....

But of course there are certian legalities to all of this and all of this is purely hypothetical

http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/rmr.asp

Once you install it a little icon should appear right next to the print icon (least that what happend by me). The icon looks like the reader icon and once you click it, it converts the current document into .lit format.

Enjoy!

another source is newsgroup groups. there are a few that feature ebooks in various styles including .lit, pdf and palm reader.

not that difficult to find and on some days an extensive collection

I've been using my existing PDA (Compaq Aero) for ebook reading for about a year now.

I'd advise having a look at www.fictionwise.com. In addition to MSReader (.lit) ebooks it also sells Mobipocket (.prc) and Palm ebook format (.pdb) . There's info there on how to get the free PocketPC readers for both formats.

Personally I tend to prefer the mobipocket reader myself, but it's just a matter of personal preference.

Also http://www.peanutpress.com has palm format books (Reader downloadable from here), and http://www.mobipocket.com/ has mobipocket (though, unless they've done some serious work on it since I last checked I wouldn't recommend this site as the search facillity is nonexistant

Hope this helps

Mark

You can get the free reader from adobe.com. It is the Acrobat reader for Pocket PC. A warning though...it is huge and requires that .pdf files be converted into PDA format. I am not a big fan of this application.

I get almost all of my books in the Palm reader format.

I actually like the pocket adobe reader. I have been able to find alot of books I like in adobe format. You can set your setting in actisync not to reformat the files if you want. What the pocket version "adds in" is the ability to reflow (basically word wrap) the text. If you have word 2000 or later you can paste in the phd file and export a .lit (microsoft reader) file. I am running 97 so I can't. There is a adobe ebook reader but not a pocket pc version. BTW I carry all my manuals (axim, sprint db) with me so I can refer to them. Adobe is a little slow on the axim but better than nothing.
