Axim PDAs have a tool included to make a full backup to a .dbk file. It contains all databases, including the contacts.
But obviously it is not possible to restore particular databases, only the full backup. Did anyone try this? It just gives a warning message, but does not offer any options.
Problem is that my contacts have got lost in Outlook and I know they are stored in a previous .dbk file - but how to get them back without data loss?
I did not find any tool which can handle .dbk files as well.
Given the limited abilities of the M$ backup application, I seriously doubt this can be done. For future issues of this nature, try Sprite Backup as the application of choice for backing up. You can backup to your PPC or to your PC. You can backup individual files, batches of files or everything and they can be restored in the same manner. A much superior program.

I highly recommend Sprite Backup Premium Edition. You can even set it to back up when your battery reaches a certain percentage. That way, you leave it if you need to go out of town and not have to worry about having to reinstall everything when you get back. ;)

If you only ever buy one peaice of software for your axim make sure that it is Sprite Backup it is by far the best backup software i have ever used. Set it up to backup during the night and you always have the last days backup.
This backup software works so much faster than the active sync rubbish that its untrue.
I do agree with everyone that Sprite Backup is the best out there in terms of Pocket PC backups but that does not solve the initial problem that was raised here. It is good to look at in the future but shoving Sprite Backup down his throat does not get his contacts back.
Yes it might be worth thinking about getting Sprite Backup to avoid such problems, but...
If I did a full backup now (.dbk file), restore my old backup (including my contacts), I would have them back in my Axim. From there, I should be able to export them to Outlook or something else. Then I would restore my latest full backup again.
That should work, but I don't feel as if I'd like to do that now....I know something will go wrong...
